Those amongst us who played SMAC will remember the quotes you got with advances- little summaries of what an advance could do, making fictional technology actually meant. How about ones in Civ 3, and if yes, how about suggestions.

YES YES YES!!!
Civ3 must have quotes just like SMAC did. It will add so much in terms of atmosphere. I think historical quotes should be used as much as possible. It would be so cool to have quotes from Ceasar, Napoleon, Churchill, Lenine etc. Obviously, this is not possible everywhere. It would be fine if Firaxis invented a few quotes, they certainly did a fine job on smac. They could use quotes from famous novels too. I guess the only rule should that the quote should be as fun as possible and make the tech "come alive" for the player!
Specifics, let's see:
Flight: quote from Wright brothers, maybe.
Communism: quote from Lenine or Marx.
Democracy: how about the famous quote from Churchill about it being bad but better than anything else.
Rocketry: quote from Von Braun (inventor of V2)
Philosophy: quote from socrates, maybe.
Code of laws: maybe ten commandments quote.
Nuclear: quote from Oppenheimer "destroyer of worlds".
Space flight: "One small step for man, one big step for mankind."
Well, I am sure Firaxis will find much cooler quotes than these.
------------------
No permanent enemies, no permanent friends.'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"
G'Kar - from Babylon 5 episode "Z'ha'dum"
-
Nuclear Weaponry: "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." - J. Robert Oppenheimer
Communism: "From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need." - Karl Marx, The Communist Manifesto
Nationalism: "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country." - Nathan Hale
Computers: "Computers are useless. They can only give you answers." - Pablo Picasso
Tactics: "If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then even the deepest spy cannot discern it nor the wise make plans against it." -Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Philosophy: "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think." - Socrates
Democracy: "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time." - Winston Churchill
Space Flight: "The Earth is the cradle of the mind, but one cannot stay in the
cradle forever." -Konstantin Tsiolkovsky
Future Tech: "What is now proved was once only imagined." - William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and HellYou only live twice; when you are born, and again when you look death in the face.

My biggest problem with SMAC was that i always stopped playing about halfway through, because my overal victory was already 100% forseeable.
There was no challenge left in the game, for me. I must have played about 10-15 "stopped halfway through" games, before i finally gave up, and never touched the game again.
You guys talkning about "quotes with advances".
Comparing with above problem, i woudnt put it that high, om MY priority-list. On the other hand: its a harmless easy-to-implement suggestion, so why not?

quote:
Space flight: "One small step for man, one big step for mankind."
That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.
Alas at his big moment he got his line wrong.
For Socrates/ Philosophy : "I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance".
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

This is a great idea. It isn't something so big that it won't have a chance of being implemented, but it had a great effect on atmosphere in SMAC. It really, really annoyed me that when you made a tech advance in CTP, nothing happened. The only reason I know who wrote "Moby **** " is because of that quote in SMAC (hey, it was educational!). Voiceovers are a must.
Some specifics:
Philosophy: Descartes, "I think, therefore I am"
Steel: That qoute they use in smac.- Biddles
