  • I want my farmland

    Greetings Civers,

I think Civ3 is great. Especially the AI is really an improvement from Civ2, but there's something that really annoys me about Civ3.
Namely the missing "double irrigation" aka "farmland" and the new way of doing things by cluttering the landscape with railways.

Does anyone now of a mod that returns railways to their former functionality of increasing only production by 50% and introducing farmland? Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Dankies

    Not possible.

That is one thing CTP2 has over Civ3. In CTP2 literally EVERYTHING can be changed since it has a built in scripting language. Civ3 is a simple take it or leave it affair.

That's not really true. In many areas you do have a lot of options, however some (not all) terrain effects (in this case, the effects of railroads) and all worker actions have been hard-coded.

what's up with irrigation anyways? When flying in a plane over the Midwest (U.S.), I don't exactly see a bunch of little blue irrigation lines.

Yes, thats the matter which makes the missing farmland even worse. The "irrigated look" is fine for some primitive pre-medieval farming, but it looks really bad for modern farming. Like there's a massive flooding or something.

Which is even more reason why they should have a midevil farm irrigation and a modern irrigation.

I think some terrain mod is available in the directoryfiles (link at the top right corner). Look in the graphic subfolder of CIV 3. At page 3 there are terrain mods which probably include farms instead of irrigations (I guess), but that is pure graphic of course, it does not change the function of the irrigation.
Hope this is can be somehow a compromis between the 2.

how about 1/2 of the land being mines... and the ground being covered in railroads...but no regular paved roads...

finally, grasslands have more food than plains. All maps i've seen have the Great Plains be...plains... the Great Plains area is the most fertile in the world...

Check these out if you'd like something better. They even have little barns. The Grassland graphic was originally done by Zeb Fisher, I added the Plains by playing with the colour balance.

You're being nit-picky. It's a game, not a simulation. As for mines, if you remove the mining bonus in the editor, you won't get them on prime farmland anymore.

hmm...anyway to reduce roads/highways? i've seen some that make them look different...

A few people have tried, but IMO they didn't succeed. Just have a look around Files, you'll find a few things there. I've thought of doing some mixing and matching with some of them, but I just haven't had the patience. It will be very nit-picky work!

Hmmm, I guess that's my word of the day.

most are just something like they go straight (along gridlines) and then diagnally (spelling?)... not really worth it.. the farmthing I'd like to check out...

There's one there, I forget by whom, that's does an urban sprawl thing, with skyscraper etc. A nice idea, but a little busy. Another one, again I forget by whom, has smaller buildings spread around, like hamlets. Still a bit to busy for my tastes though.
