  • Dinosaurs project halted!

    quote:

    Hi everyone.

I know you've been waiting a while for an update on the Dinosaur game. I've spent recent months playing with some different ideas on Dinos, but a lot of my time, and just about everyone else's at Firaxis, has been devoted to assisting in the Civilization III design. Civ III is looking and playing great and we think you'll all be thrilled with the final product! Also, I've been working on a new prototype, but more on that in a minute.

    quote:

So I have decided to set aside Dinos for a while to work on this new idea, as well as devoting my attention to CivIII

I think this is good news for me!

Isn't that what you, I and many others here said last year (concentrate on Civ3)? Why do Dinos when only 2 people in the whole cared about it while millions cared about Civ3?

While I welcome his efforts on the part of Civ III I do hope this does not spell a slow slide into oblivion for Dino. I would never have thought a pirate game or train game could have been as addictive as they were until Sid applied his magic touch to them. Civ III is largely an expansion on a theme but it takes a special kind of person to create a potentially new gaming genre. With more and more development studios being wholly or partly owned by the big corporate giants there are fewer and fewer people with original ideas and the financial clout to put them into practice.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

              Great news indeed!

It's good to hear from Sid that he, with the rest of the team, is concentrated on Civ III. It's doubly good to hear from Sid talking about a Civ III looking and playing great.

(I don't care about dinos, I got tired of them 8 years ago.)

              I WANT CIV III!!!

Well personally I thought the Dino's game sounded dumb from the begininning. Anything to move Civ3 along is a good thing. I'll bet we see it this year. I said that before too though, but now I don't think there's a chance it'll slip to next year. Course it'd be worth it if it does, but hopefully won't.

Hey, uh, this is the civ3 page, not dino page. consentrate on civ3, not Dinosaurs.

I don't believe this announcement is going to have any baring on how fast Civ III comes out. It has been quite evident for a couple of months that Firaxis at the least has put the dino game on the back burner.

It plays good? WHAT? How far along is Civ III?

Firaxis has always said that they make a playable prototype from the beginning. They test that, decide what they think and go from there. So the game may be less than half done and yet they think the basic workings of war or diplomacy or movement is playing well. Doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Hooray! Now Sid and co. can go full-bore into Civ III! This can be only a good thing for us hard-core civers! No offence to Sid, but I imagine I speak for many people when I say the Dinos concept did not really grab me. However, this concerns me:
                      quote:

Then, a couple of months ago, I was inspired by a new idea on a completely different topic. I built a really fun prototype and well, what can I say - this new project took hold! So I have decided to set aside Dinos for a while to work on this new idea, as well as devoting my attention to CivIII.

What does this mean? Is the Civ III workforce going to remain diluted by being split by another project?

I for one (out of a morbid sense of curiosity) whould like to know what this other "idea" is.

I too hope this really does mean that CivIII will be
                          the main concentrated game now.
As for that "other project" on Sid's agenda, I hope
its finally a sequel to Pirates !!!

The impression I got from the Firaxis site concerning "the other idea" is that it's basically another model for Dinos. They've tried several approcaches, and none of them were satisfactory, so, Sid came up with a new prototype for the dino game.

Anyhow, that'll have to wait because something much more important is on the way...
