I assume it will be quite some time before Civ3 is released. I have never played any of the Civs, just CTP. I was going to get CTP2 but from what I see and hear the Civ games are far better. Maybe I should pick up Civ2, but I hate to get it and then get Civ3 if they are similar. Any suggestions from you guys?

Should I Wait For Civ3?
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul TighTags: None

To give you an idea, there are things about Civ1 that I still enjoy going back to. It could be said that they're little things, like the different throne room deal, and the map of your world's history when the game's over. I figure Civ3 won't have all the scenarios from Civ2 Multiplayer Gold, so maybe you should get that. I'm no expert though, so this is just a humble opinion.

Yeah I saw Civ2 Multiplayer Gold in the stores but was waiting for CTP2 and now I think I may try and get Civ2.Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. I came to the site from SMAC and I still play it a lot. I liked the historical aspect CTP, but some of the problems made me limit my playtime. I'll probably pick up Civ2 and see what the fuss is all about.Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. Yeah, go for Civ2. If you liked SMAC, but had issues with CTP, you'll probably still have them with CTP2. After I bought it, it put me in a mood for TBS games again, but I found myself thinking about playing SMAC instead of my shiny new CTP2... so I returned it.
I think one of the best things about Civ2 is the huge numbers of scenarios. You'll never run out of something interesting to play.
Especially now that it's in bargin bins and clearence, you can't beat Civ2 for gaming value for the dollar.

I bought Civ2 when it first came out in Finland in '96. I've played both SMAC and CTP since (I foolishly even went and bought the latter one), but I keep returning to good old Civ2. Neither of the newer games gave me the same kind of "one-more-turn" urge as it does. Civ2 and Freeciv are still the only games with permanent spots on my hard drives.
So yes, it's deffenitely a good idea to go for Civ2MPG instead of CTP2. If CTP worked on you, Civ2 should keep you up up at nights at least until Civ3 comes out, and long after that in the unlikely event that Civ3 flops. And at least you'll learn to understand the Apolyton civslur.

I've played civ2, smac, ctp1+2, and civ2MPG is probably the best out of all of them. the graphics are better in ctp, but civ2 is much more addictive. go for civ2MPG, then civ3 when it comes out.

Thanks guys for the input. I thought CTP was alright but it just didn't make me want to play just one more turn like SMAC did. I really like the historical aspect of the civ games. I just want to be caught up in the game like I was in SMAC. From all the scenarios and mod packs I see for Civ2 I should have plenty of reason to keep playing just one more turn.Which side are we on? What's Freeciv?
Freeciv is a free(of course ) civgame, mainly for alternate OS as Linux, BeOS etc. It is also in a Windows version, but that one is not well supported, since the Freeciv team(as far as I know) don't like it because of it's high price.
Freeciv can be found on www.freeciv.com

Tha's fine ! Yes, Civ 2 is the best TBS ever. SMAC follows it in a very hounored second place. CTP was plenty of good intentions but... And CTP 2 is a game that I'm not going to buy in according to the comments from people that did so. Then if you are patient enough to wait for Civ III you can have a lot of fun playing Civ2 MGE wich offers several possibilities with different scenarios and very accurate gameplay.

That's www.freeciv.org, you heathen! The project is open source, after all.
And yes, a Windows version exists and should be pretty functional by now, even when run nativly. An X-based Win version also exists. However, all the really cool people play it in it's natural environment - a UNIX-like OS.
The graphics and diplomacy don't kick ass, but the AI eats people alive. You can also have up to 30 players on a single map, either AI or MP.

By all means, get Civ2MPG. The gameplay and simplicity just cannot be beat. It also includes some great scenarios that give it that "10 games in 1" feel.
I keep visiting the CTP2 forum with the hope that some good reports will encourage me to buy it. I think tonight may be the last straw. Apparently, someone experimented with their game and deleted all their units with the exception of some spys and diplomats. Tragically, the CTP2 AI engine STILL could not mount a good attack. This sounds like a disgrace to the Civ series.
Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on there. My hope is that you will not let the other civ-type games be your guide. I played them all to some degree except CTP2 and none of them, IMOHO, match up to Civ2MPG.
