I only hold back offensive elites and only then if I will be using them soon. It is not common, but a consideration.

Saving elites IMO is not the way to go. I woul rather have a vet cavalty unit than a elite knight. You lose the chance for a GL but You really only need a few anyway, so I say go ahead and upgrade all offensive units, in the long run it is worth it. The exception to this is if you have not had any GL's then it is recommened to save those elites for injured and/ or obsolete units to get your first GL, (to build army for HE and MA)

        Depends on the defenders.
The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

          thanks!

now I know why I couldn't do that. I was doing shift-u but not from the F3 screen.

I actually upgraded my units individually from the military advisor screen by right clicking the units.

What I said is in agreement with this statement. Normally I will upgrade, but say I have a few elite Riders and I am already at war and I know I will be seeing some lessor units on this turn or the next. I may as well let those Riders get in a whack and see if I can make a leader. I can upgade at any time. If no war or I expect to see knights or calv then I will surely upgrade those Riders. So all I am saying is there is often a situation that you may be able to make an exception to the upgrade and possibly benefit.

Finally found it. Right-Click on the unit to upgrade. I presume Upgrade All is also available when appropriate.

Nice thing is, if I have 5 riders at their reds (in HP), and upgrade them, they get their health back.

That has come in very handy a few times.
