I just scored my first Domination victory (requires 66% land control and 66% population). It was on Regent but hey, I'll take it! It happened late in the game (1958 a.d.) and the thing is, I didn't see it coming. Is there a place somewhere in the advisors screens or elsewhere that summarizes land control and population distribution? I finished the 1956 turn and then the little window popped up that said "you win!" It was cool and all but I was trying to eek out a cultural victory. Thanks for any help on this...

There is a programme availiable that can work this out for you. Have a look around the files forum, or try a search. Of course, if you are lucky, a helpful chap will post a link...
And Domination victories really do sneak up on you..."Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

Cultural wins sneak even more. In my last 2 emperor games, cultural win was triggered about 10 turns before I was about to win by space ship or diplomatic skills.Originally posted by Sean

You need Mapstat, which available in the Files forums both here and at CFC.

Everyone, thanks for the tips! I'll poke around for the file mentioned... BTW, Theseus, I think it was you who helped me achieve this victory. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was you who started a post about how to get started with the Romans and there unique unit (Legionary) and tips for the first several turns. Anyway, someone had a fantastic post about building a few warriors and a barracks and searching out the nearest opponent. Switch to archers and then legionarys ASAP and go from there. Until I read that post I was still trying to make the Civ II idea of peaceful expansion work. Well, it doesn't in Civ III. You have to poke fingers in some of your foes eyes early unless you want to spend much of the game playing catch-up. I was so sure I would never accept the new ideas and play concepts in Civ III being a HUGE fan of Civ II. I was wrong (thank-god!) and now I can't imagine going back. To all the new players out there, hang in there, this game is terrific if you give it a chance and spend some time on these great forums!Originally posted by Theseus

Doh!
I couldn't resit a final quick follow-up... NOW I KNOW WHY YOU CAN UNCHECK DOMINATION AS A VICTORY CONDITION. LMAO... And I just started a new game before realizing that... I'm starting to roll pretty easily on Regent (I know, I know but I doubt I'll ever play Diety anyway, so far doesn't appeal to me) so Emperor is next...

Monarch you mean...
I find monarch to be the most fun, the slight AI advantage makes up for...well, the AI, without having to catch up a lot.I'm going to rub some stakes on my face and pour beer on my chest while I listen Guns'nRoses welcome to the jungle and watch porno. Lesbian porno.

My last "surprise! you win!" was a cultural win. I was playing on Emperor (I made the map, though, for specific purposes) as the Babs.
My forces were poised for the final slugfest: me vs. Persia. Mine were far superior to theirs (I had MA, they didn't even have Tanks), so I was relishing their destruction when I got the popup message. I was actually irritated.

Nice Arrian... MA against Infantry. You got some nukes to throw in too?The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

Theseus,
Nope, no nukes. I hate nukes. Won't use 'em. Plus, I didn't have Fission yet.
It was kinda cool getting to use some of the modern units (I had Jet Fighters knocking Persian bombers out of the sky), and that's part of the reason I've decided to play Emperor for a bit - more modern age showdowns.
