Your Democracy will get overthrown if you have too much war weariness. Were you in a long, drawn-out war?
Also, _what_ is with all the desert... Did you play nuclear tennis or something? Or did all that global warming turn everything to desert. Hmmm... maybe a combination of both.
You might want to decrease the size of the image or crop it in the future. If nothing else it breaks the formating.
Yes its happened to others. You were at war too long and weren't doing well enough.
Hey the games over. Its 2077 and if nothing else happens to end the game it ends in 2050 on score. Start a new game.
And when you do remember that its easier to stay at war in a Republic than a Democracy. Its easier if you don't lose any cities. Its easier if you don't lose a lot of troops. In other words do well and you civilians are more tolerant of war.
Hey a red sun. You sure must be making a mess of the enviroment. First time I have seen one even in a screen shot.
Never mind the people of Sevastopol still love you. This has happened to me during a long war before now.One way to avoid it is to give them some entertainment with the tax sliders.

It has happened to me. I had the governor set to auto manage the citizens moods and production. So, all I had to do was go to war. I was at war for a long time. I was also a democracy. Interesting enough, it did not stop me at all. Because the governors managed the citizens moods and production, I just let it go. After a few turns, I got a decision to pick a new government and went straight back to democracy.

So it seems to be due to war weariness. I am at war since about 50 years, but not always against the same AI. I started with the Chinese (light pink) and stopped in order to fight the French (pink) who occupied half of the biggest continent and attacked me. This war is the cause of the desert (see this thread ). Then the Japaneses (dark red) attacked me (no war declaration) ; they occupied 2/3 of their continent. I am still at war against them and against the Chinese too. I also conducted short term wars against Aztecs (dark green) and Persia (dark blue).
I do not know if it is due to my empire size or my control of luxuries (monopoly for 3, oligopoly for 3 others), but there is always a civ to attack me.

Of course it happen, as others suggested it is probably due to war weariness. That's why I do not like to change into a Democratic gov't, especially at latter stages of the game when one surely will be provoked or attcaked. It's a bummer that the AI cannot differentiate between wars, meaning that it's one thing to be the aggresor and a totallly different ball game if you're on the receiving end and your people should recognize that and support you at least for a while under Democracy!
So long....
Excellence can be attained if you Care more than other think is wise, Risk more than others think is safe, Dream more than others think is practical and Expect more than others think is possible.

The AI does differentiate that way. If someone else starts the war you will have an instant increase in happiness. This will decrease over time as the population gets used to the war, then war weariness will start to accumulate.
Even if you goad the other side into starting a war you will get the happiness increase. If you start a war though there is no happiness increase UNLESS its with a traditional enemy. Then the populace is thrilled to take on the demons from the other side. Just make sure you finish them fast before the citizens notice that everyone's blood is the same color.

ROFL I like that line. It's too bad my people always seem to remember. In fact, the last turn of my current game the citizens overturned my Demo. Oh well, it made it pretty easy for me to go to bed.
Yeah, it's a *****. 9 turns of anarchy the modern age can hit you pretty hard. Definitely a situation to be avoided (if there is no end to the war in sight you might what to try communism or even monarchy as WW may still be pretty bad under republic at this point). WW must have been crippling you anyway, what was your luxury rate at?
Randolph,
BTW, "According to Firaxis" anarchy will last anywhere from 1 to 8 turns.
1-5 turns randomly determined, plus a 0-3 modifier depending on the size of your civ. Non-religious assumed, of course.
Of course, in late game it always seems to be 6-8 turns for me.
