I know that in the 1.21f patch, the brilliant minds at Firaxis decided to couple the .bic file settings into the actual saved file. The result was that your game settings are now locked from the get-go.
My question is why?
We are given the ability to change/cheat at anything we want but we must decide from the beginning how we are going to do this. It doesn't make sense.
Case in point (true story, happened last night):
I'm playing a HUGE/16 civ/deity game now for over a month. It's the best game I've played so far with CivIII. But...
I finally dicovered Computers which gives me the ability to produce MI. Strange, I can't seem to produce any MI in any of my mega-cities. I click on an ordinary infantry and press Shift-U to upgrade all and find out that only one unit was upgraded to MI. Searcing after this unit, I see a bizarre blurry image instead of the normal MI icon. And worst, this "new" MI has an att/def of 0. Uh-oh.
After checking the .bic file, I see that the "army" characteristic for both MI and MA was checked. Hmm. Can't change anything now. I guess I could continue to play without MI or MA but that seems rather boring and would give the Germans with their Panzars an extreme advantage over those who max out with Cavalry.
One months worth of playtime is shot. My best game so far has come to a pointless end. Why? I wish someone could tell me.
