Ok, I'm confused. What's the difference between Civilization III and Civilization III: Game of the Year (Civ3 GOTY for short)?
Is it just a re-release of the same game but with different packaging, or what?

I remember Half-Life was released again sometime after as a GOTY edition, but that was named GOTY by about 60 magazines worldwide. Seems like an excuse to keep the full price of the game for a little longer.

I guess it's a video of the "Making Of CivIII" and part of the strategy guide.
From the news
The new edition will include the most current version of the game (version 1.29f), three new game maps, a keyboard command card, [the "Making Of CivIII"] video, and an excerpt from Prima`s official strategy guide for the game.

Oh no! If they bundled a 30 dollar play the world and put it into the 30 dollar GOTY Edition, then that would be a loss of money! It's much better to have the customer pay 30 for GOTY, and then 30 more for PtW.
Yes. Marketing, definitely. Considering that PTW will grab some attention not only from fans but also from those who have not bought Civ3 till now, they are trying to spice things up for those people. Remember that PTW will require Civ3 in order to be played.
Sure, you can expect some Civ3 Gold Edition in the future, featuring both Civ3 and PTW.
Well companies can either treat customers as valuable or not. If they do not they may discover it was a mistake. Basically it comes down to demand. If they dump on customers and offer items of great interest, people will take the abuse. If they offer less desirable items, people will ignore them at cash register. They do it at their peril. Companies that do not value their customers tend to go out of business.
