  • Custom maps and tech rate

    The tech rate for the different map sizes can be set in the rules, but how do these settings apply to custom size maps?

    Ok, the reason I need to know is this:

    I DL'ed one of the GARGANTUAN world maps and I set the tech rate to 700 for Huge worlds, but it doesn't seem to have an impact on the game...

      Goto the general tab... the techs that count are there.

      I keep the settings as they are when I play Giga maps.

        That setting doesn't help at all.

        I'm talking about the setting under World Sizes called "Tech Rate".

        The higher this thing is the slower research will be on the map. Problem is I don't think the setting affects scenario (custom) maps...

            I think the map size that controls the user created map is "standard." The problem is that on the huge maps the amount of research being done as represented by beakers being produced is way to high. Thats how you get to ModernArmor by 1000AD or sooner.

            The back of the envelope calculations that I use are these. (Given Width(w) and Height(h) and Number of Civs (nc) then these formula are based on the 1.21f standard map values.)

            Distance Between Civs = sqrt( w*h ) * 0.15 - 3

            Optimal Number of Cities = (w*h) / (75*nc)

            Tech Rate = (w*h) / 22.5 <=== tech rate mimics tiny
            Tech Rate = (w*h) / 41.7 <=== tech rate mimics standard
            Tech Rate = (w*h) / 64 <=== tech rate mimics huge

            (I like tanks by 1000AD so I use the last one.)

            Max Research Time = 5 * nc

            Hope this helps

              Yeah, I think I read that the game uses the Standard settings for all custom maps. So you'd have to change the rate under Standard, not Huge.
