  • Screen shots of developed/placed cities.

I have been searching the boards for screen shots of cities that show good placement and development. I'm looking to figure out what a good city site looks like, and how to pick between locations when placing a city. Also, maybe shots of cities in early development, and then late game development.

Are there any threads that discuss / show this already on the forum that I have missed?

If not.... This may be a good place to start one.

It's not a screen shot, but look at the opening turn of AU 105.

In general, you should be looking for a good mix of shielded plains, some hills, and bonus and luxury resources. Being on a river is excellent. Flood plains are OK, but especially good if they have a bonus resource. Forest are OK, too, especially along a river.

Early on, I prefer to have highly productive cities, rather than maximizing territory, so, if possible, I stay away from deserts, tundra, and jungles. The resources that can later appear on those tiles can be addressed at that time.

          Look in the Strategy forum.

There's a bunch... that's just the most recent. But you might want to start with 105, as we consciously created a thread for hints and tips. I think it's especially good for polishing early game techniques.

No problem! Take a look at my "1720ad.zip" file; I'm sure you won't be disappointed. On my main continent, cities are built very close to each other. On the remote continent, cities are built ver far apart to maximize population growth.

                  ArmaGeddin,

If you want an example of relatively wide city spacing, check out some of my games (hang on a sec while I find the thread links):

                  1) "Ultimate Power" - my 12 leader China game: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...mate+AND+Power

                  2) Two different games I posted in discussion of Palace/FP placement: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...threadid=59349

The later saves will show well-developed cities (something I pride myself on).

I once found a post that had a nice map for diffent sizes and where to place them. I think it was in the size 6 thread. It has size 21 down to some low number.

Here is a link to a strategy and tactics web site that focuses on evaluating and improving the power of opening terrain positions.

                        Improving Your Opening Play Sequences

The website includes two example scenarios that you can download and play to evaluate starting city sites in over 18 different types of city locations.

You should be able to access the webpages directly, even without registration.

You use the same techniques of evaluating power and planning moves for your subsequent city cites as you use for the start position. Its just that you get much more flexibility in choosing the next sites than you get with the start position as it is dealt to you.

                        Good luck
