  • Sea movement into hills cities cost 2 moves!

I this game I´m playing, I have a coastal city on a hill tile, and I noticed it costs 2 movement points for my Galleys to move into it. While this was a bit surprising, it is not of course a major problem (although I´m tempted to call it a bug).

Anyway, I thuoght I´d report this, since I can´t remember anybody else mentioning it.

Save game attached (notice: huge map). Just move the Galley into the city and you´ll see for yourselves.

    that's strange.

one would think that they'd place the harbour at the bottom of the hill.
so are they pulling the damn ship up to the top then?

Too bad we can´t build cities on mountains. That would probably use up all moves.

        LOL

I can imagine those poor fishermen carrying their boats every given day up the hill - down the hill - up the hill - ...

Well it's atleast slightly odd that a city can act as a canal between two bodies of water

Did you ever hear of Istambul? Find a map with it and the surrounding area.
Istambul is located exatly on the Bosphorus canal, which divides Europe and Asia, linking the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea. Basically Istambul acts as a canal between those two bodies of water.

Tiberius, the thing about Constantinople is that half of it is on one side of the Bosphorus and half on the other side.

A better example of that kind of connection would have been Panama, or Suez.

Although I do find it amusing that it can link two bodies of water, what was realy fun is when you have an area filled with small lakes and you set up a chain system going deep into the continent.

I'm afraid I don't understand you It is indeed on both sides of the canal. So what? If you made a scenario with the turks, wouldn't you make Istambul/Constantinopole acting as a canal between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea?
In what way is Panama or Suez a better example?

                  Tiberius...

Constantanople is already on a natural canal. Panama or Suez is not on a canal.

I see. The Bosphorus was already there when Constantinopole was founded, as opposed to civ3 where you found a city between two bodies of water to act as a canal!
                    That was a hard one!

PS But the result is still the same.

                      hehe

                      fight. fight. fight.

speaking of cities connecting two oceans, why oh why does the AI always plant his city on the square one spot away from the tile that connects the two oceans?

This always annoys me too. Its gotten better in recent patches but in my last game, there were at least 4 roman cities placed 1 tile away from being useful canal cities.
