  • Upgrade armies???

I have an army of 3 knights, and I want to upgrade them to cavalry but it says "no armys can be upgraded at this time." Aside from various unit name plural errors, this is one of the most annoying things ever.

I WANT TO UPGRADE MY ARMY!!!

We allwant to be able to do that and have complained about it since December. It is why many of us never build armies until much later in the game.

You cannot upgrade units in armies.

Hopefully this will be changed in PTW but, alas, Firaxis has not mentioned this...so it probably is not addressed in the expansion.

Supposedly if you return the army to the city where the units were first added to it you can unload the units and upgrade them. I must point out that I have not tried this as I seldom use armies and when I do, I sure as hell can't remember what city they came from.

Nope, not possible. You can't unload unit out of an Army (was possible due to a bug in an older patch, but not any longer). And you can't upgrade units inside an Army. Never ever. It is impossible because of the game balance issues. If it was possible, armies would become too powerful. As they are now, they come handy in various situations, but they are no game breakers.

Don;t load them all at once; do it incrementally, adding power as you progress.

It's a thing of balance, if you can't upgrade units, they become fairly useless, and if you can, they become too powerful. Well if you have to build one they are prohibitively expensive anyway...

Once you have the Pentagon, you can stick a new unit in your old armies, I believe. If you have a lot of armies, building the Pentagon could be really helpful, since the new units in the armies will do most of the attacking or defending (but probably not both, unless the army's units are really old and underpowered, relatively speaking).

Theseus has hit the nail on the head, loading early armies full of units may not be the best choice for your overall game strategy.

There are some specific cases where a full army is the only choice but in most cases just load the army with one unit or enough units to get a quick victory while still preserving open slots to increase power and maintain some transportability.

I included a fairly detailed discussion of these army choices in the Japan Campaign review from GOTM9:
