  • The Buy One, Get One Free Technology Bug

Hopefully this hasn't been mentioned yet.

Steal a technology from another civilization. It'll ask you to select the tech you want to acquire, then a popup will appear asking which advance to research next. Click on What's the Big Picture? Now you get to select a second technology to pilfer.

I think this requires that you be researching the same tech that you steal. I have repeated this bug several times in my current game. Note that if the civ doesn't have a second tech, you have to Ctrl-Alt-Del the game since it'll keep demanding that you steal a second tech.

Btw, I have the latest patch (1.29f).

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my tech rate is 0% (I have 80% taxes so I just buy and/or steal all my techs since in a Deity game there's no way to keep up otherwise).

Humans are like cockroaches, no matter how hard you try, you can't exterminate them all!

You're actually stealing tech...? Why not just buy it? it's cheaper that way.

I'm playing a Deity game on a Standard map.

Normally, I do trade for techs. But prices have skyrocketed now and with everybody at war, the techs aren't being traded so the price is staying high.

Keep in mind that by buying it you are giving an opponent a very valuable resource (gold). Stealing it may cost more but denies benefits to your opponents.

That is very true, but, you save a lot of cash in return to invest in someting else. Sure you'll give them 300gpt +/- but spending 2500gpt in something else are more usefull. If it fails you're even more screwed.

The AI will prolly just use the money to buy more techs...

I lost my only DIety game horribly so I'm growing my backbone back

but, to each his own i guess.

The last few techs that I've bought from other civs were around 1400 gp. One that was traded a lot was a real bargain at only 800 gp.

Btw, I'm earning almost 400 gp per turn thanks to my 80% tax rate. I've just entered the Industrial Age, I'm under a Monarchy, and I'm on a permanent war footing. I just mobilized for war for the very first time in Civ3. Now I can finally crush my enemies like bugs.
