  • A simple fix re Spearman vs. tank...

There is, I think, quite a simple solution to the 'spearman killing tank' problem. Since we know that workers get a graphics upgrade when they enter the Industrial & Modern Eras, why not apply the same to Spearmen & Pikemen? Simply create extra folders titled 'Spearman Industrial Ages', Pikeman Industrial Ages' etc, then put in either graphics from other units or custum ones. This doesn't actually change any game mechanics, just removes the image of a bronze age spearmen blowing up a tank.

I've implemented this into my game already, but I haven't played long enough to find out if it works. Can anyone else test it out and see if it does?

I have considered this in another thread... can't remember the titile, but if you're a regular here, i'm sure you've read it. But after considering it, I dismissed it.

Imagine 16 civs at different stages of development. It may be problematic to support that many variation of unit graphics.

I'm not suggesting that each Civ should get it's own different unit graphics. Besides, it shouldn't be that much work for the CPU, after all it does the same thing with workers (which are always numerous) and people are highly unlikely to have many spearmen left by that stage anyway.

Hmmm... I think I've seen someone suggest that in the late game any remaining spearmen should get bazookas or something. It might have been you. Anyway, this was just a quite simple mod I made that involves nothing except a little file copying and renaming.

Yeah, but what about those civs that are behind in tech and couldn't realistically make bazookas?

Well...those civs behind in the tech race, haven't got to the industrial ages yet anyway, so they shouldn't change...

As soon as I see a tank lose to a spearman, I'll jump on your bandwagon.

This has been discussed before and we're assured by Dan Magaha, I believe, that it will work. I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet, though I intend to. Same with Archer etc. At least it won't look quite as strange having a Longbowman battling my Infantry once I hit the Industrial era, even if it doesn't actually change anything.

There's just one problem: what could the modern equivalent of a Spearman be?

                      a palace guard maybe??
national guard might be an option, could even be a policeman. Just a thought

I wouldn't even go as far as national guard, I'd say local militia. National Guard are actually pretty well armed when they go into combat.
