  • Should SAV Files be Compressed?

I don't think they should, and I'll tell you why:

It slows down how fast my turns process. I know, I can turn auto save off, but my computer crashes often. Its very inconvinent to have my computer crash just before a conquest victory, only to have it crash and force me to reload from 100 turns ago. I'd like to be able to go as fast as I used to be able to go in 1.17F.

Firaxis are quite a bunch of geniuses - we all complain about the game being too slow, so they make it slower!

No compressing!! Get yourself a bigger HD.

Try turning off autosave, and then see how much you dont like compressed files.

(Did that make sense? Its 0133 and I'm tired)

Well, I have turned off autosave (I simply just hate autosave) and I like the compressed files!

I say keep the compressed by default, but add an option not to compress. So C with positive to compression.

No compressing. The savefiles aren't that big, and with modern HDs being in range of 20-40 GB, I don't think the compression matters. And ever since 1.21f, my games take longer to load.

                        What's your problem ?

Compressed files : it will require more CPU, but less HD - upgrading your HD will be cheaper than changing your PC...

I have no problem with the auto-save and let it on all the time. Today, never encountered any crash (playing v1.16 on W2K or WXP)

1.2 ghz runs slow with a gig of ram. tsk tsk tsk.

Compress more efficiently, perhaps. My winzip can compress a one-MB trext file in less than one sec, so why should Civ3 need any noticable lag?
