  • Newbie question

I am playing the game with the new patch. I was offered to build a certain wonder but didn't want to build it at one point, went to go build it a little later and it was not available to build at any of my cities. Is this a bug or part of the gameplay?

    Thanks

Has another civ already built the wonder? Check it pressing F7.

Or is it a "naval" wonder like the lighthouse, colossus or Magellan's? Those you can build only in coastal cities.

Are you sure the wonder isn't being built in another of your cities?
Some wonders require access to resources (such as Iron Works); if you lost these resources you can't build that wonder.

I think it was the Art of War but not for sure, it was a battle related wonder though. My gold stash has gone down in the game by quite a bit, could that be it, not enough to build now?

No, wonders only costs shields during the building phase.
But one of your other cities might have started building the wonder, so you can't build it in a second city. You should be able to find that out by pressing F7, too.

None of my other cities have started building the city, I know that. If another Civ is building it does that mean that I cannot?

Did you disband units in a city, so that they were converted into shields? With these shields you are not allowed to build a wonder, you first must finish the current improvement/unit.

I have now went many rounds without being to build a wonder. My Culture is rockin though and I am still expanding my territory. The only thing that has went down to my knowledge has been my gold cash. I only have around 250 or so and it has dipped much lower than that at times.

All of the possible reasons have been given, but I'll summarize them.

                      1. Another civ has built the wonder. Hit F7 and see if it's been built.

                      2. Another city of yours is building it. Only one city of yours can be building the same wonder at a time.

                      3. It is a wonder that requires it be built on a coastal square and you are trying to build it inland.

                      4. It is a wonder that requires special conditions or resources (eg. Hoover Dam, Ironworks) and those conditions aren't met in that city.

                      5. You have disbanded a unit in that city or cleared forest to produce shields. These shields cannot be used for wonders so you must produce a non-wonder unit or building in that city before you can start a wonder.

If another civ is currently building the wonder you can start it too. Amount of gold has nothing to do with wonder building.

2b. You accidentally placed the Wonder in a building queue, which means you cannot build it elsewhere even though you're not yet building it-

If you accidently clicked for the next item to be built, a city may just start building it, if you missed it in one of your cities 'Asking what to build next'.
If governer is on, then the governer may, (I am no sure about this) have started on it.
Once a city is building it, it will not be in any other city building quere, and one has to stop building in any city first, before the city you want to build it -- it can be added to that city's build quere.

In my games I Have only been asked if I should build "Small Wonders" never a Great Wonder. I declined to build the Iron Works and I had to search for the one city (out of aprox 40) that could build it later. Took me a while to find it.

I don't really like those wonders which require a certain combination of resources.
