  • question about bombardment....

ok so the new patch allows leathal bombardment... how exactly do i get this to work? I open the editor, the only way i can access the rules is by opening one of the already existing maps. I changed most of the bombardment units... I play a game, yet my battleships, after lowering the unit to it's last hitpoint, no longer have the option of bombing that unit... please help...

Well, I never messed with the editor and the units died from bombardment, it just takes a lot of bombarding and they still die sparsely. I think your problem with the Battleships is that artillery can only kill units with bombardment. A Battleship and other naval vessels aren't artillery, they just have that option as a secondary choice. If they were artillery, they'd have no defensive value as well.

a2b2c3, the editor works around "Scenarios". Each scenario that you work on in the editor has the option of keeping the default rules, and generating a random map. If you unclick the "keep default rules" option (I forget exactly where to find it, but it's definitely on the toolbar somewhere), you can then peruse all the modifiable rules and make bombardment lethal. I assume you want to play a "normal" game of Civ3 with a random map, so just leave the "generate random map" option alone. Once the rules have been altered to your satisfaction, save the file to whatever you want (other than "civ3mod.bic", the default rules), but with a .bic extension. When you go to play Civ3, instead of starting a new game, go to "Load Scenario" and select the scenario you just created. Now you're playing Civ3, but with your custom rules.

      Have fun!

"Lethal Land Bombardment" and "Lethal Sea Bombardment" are abilities that can be given to units that can bombard. I sugest you go into civmod.bic and go to Edit > Edit Rules and get familiar with all the various rules - not just units, but terrain, resources, governments, etc.. It will help no end.

Make sure to (at least) keep a copy of your civmod.bic file somewhere in another directory. As I suggested, it's just safer to create a bic file name for your modified game, like "civ3edited.bic" or somesuch. Then you can play around with the rules all you want and never worry about having to reinstall the game.
