  • where is lethal bombardment ON option?

is this accessible within the game? or do i have to go to civ3 editor and modify original bic file to give units lethal bombardment?

You have to go into the editor and add it to those units you want to have the capability - keep in mind to hold down the CTRL key when selecting it, otherwise it clears the other flags in the unit capabilities list (thanks Firaxis, that's a bonehead interface on that list). They are the last two options in the list.

It's broken into land and sea lethality. I added both to Bombers and all jet aircraft, added lethal sea to destroyers on up, added lethal land bombardment only to battleships. I added lethal land to artillery on up.

I guess that answers a question I had about whether it was lethal attacking vs lethal defending (I was hoping for lethal defending). I havent had time to play with the editor yet.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

While it is boneheaded, thank Microsoft, not Firaxis. That is a "standard" list box, with "standard" behavior.

Destroyers should have lethal ground bombardment as well

Destroyers should have lethal ground bombardment as well. The Battleship is a thing of the past and most militaries use the Destroyer in the Battleship role. Destroyers were used extensively in Desert Storm and the War in Afghanistan to bombard ground targets with extreme accuracy.

Still at work, so haven't downloaded it yet, but I'm wondering if any of you could chime in and tell us about how balanced air vs sea is now with lethal bombardment?

One thing I noticed is that once the AI gets bombers, it showers your defenseless battleships, and no anti aircraft flag meant I had to stack ships with 3 times as many carriers to defend them.

M Bison: Destroyers have 1 or 2 5" guns. For the most part, both in Desert Storm, they weren't bombarding, as you say, but were launching missiles, and watching the New Jersey do the bombarding. They aren't designed, nor capable of any serious bombardment.

While I'm adding lethal sea bombardment to sea and air units, I'm not having adding lethal ground bombardment to any. IMHO, artillery or air attack completely destroying a ground unit is unrealistic (law of diminishing returns and such), you'd still have to send in a ground unit to finish off that one HP.

I concur, 5" guns were used more for counter-battery when firing at land, this is from personal experience BTW.

Logically, that would enable them to kill artillery and cannons, but I don't think you can get THAT specific in the Editor.

Oh great, it's not default? Augh. (At least I didn't have to wait until the modern era to find out.)

True. You understand of course that makes it even more absurd to give ironclads and frigates any bombardment capability.

I'm strongly tempted to removed ALL bombardment capability from all ships except Aegis and Battleships. Aegis may not have the firepower, but it fired more precise and accurate weapons.

During WWII destroyers where used quite extensivly (sorry for my spelling) for bombardment, both in Europe and the Pacific. Of course battleships where the main-bombardment units though, while destroyers where mainly sub-hunters (which is a little bit strange in the game, that destroyers can´t see subs, however that would make the subs even more useless, so I see the point).
