I wouldn't say that Civ3 is a "flop" per-se, it just needs some work thats all

Although I quite like the taste of McDonalds, I boycott it sincec it represents cultural imperialism.
I'll "boycott" Infogrames spontaneously if they don't sell any satisfying product, simply because I don't like to waste my money for something I dislike. If they release a good game, I'll buy it.
      Great post

      just my thoughts

I wouldnt boycott any company for cultural imperialism.. that sounds silly to me for some reason. To each his own. I love my weekly big mac. And, despite if there is cultural motives behind a product, if i like it, i will buy it.

I agree with your thoughts on Nike type companies. It might not be Nike that started this problem of slavery in SE asia, but they CERTAINLY aren't helping.

I buy Microsoft products because i admire Bill Gates (yes, i do, so sew me)... but i usually only buy them because i either need them or want them, not because of Bill.

However, i can relate. I will never, EVER consider paying AOL to give me online service. their commercials make me feel insulted. Just the line "I won't ever have to put up with computer mumbo-jumbo"... AOL... eat a lemon, i love that jumbo.

but i agree with your good product/bad product idea for the most part. Agreed, if a company puts out something worthy of purchase, i will purchase it. I will purchase things from a company out of loyalty (woo Westwood!), but i try not to deny the respect to a good game.

While I'm not going to outright boycott infogreed, they would have to put out an excellent product for me to purchase from them. A month after MOO3 is released, I'll see if that game fits the bill. If it is excellent, I might just get it. If not...

Luckily I can report at least some signs of light at the end of the tunnel.

Because of our interdicted project Infogrames Germany still insists of a written permission for any mod that patches original files. So we asked several times for an official mod permission again beginning from February but did not get any firm answer yet.

So I wrote many letters regarding the mod issue to Infogrames and now it looks like they are rethinking their position. With GP4 and UT2003 they also acquired the rights for other legendary titles that have a living mod community and they probably begin to realize that mods can help their titles and are no threat. At least that’s what I make out from some indications.

So perhaps our defeat was at least helpful to pave the way for the modding of other titles in Germany. So lets wait and hope the best.

It would be stupid for me to boycott infogrames despite my disappointment with civ3. I wont buy another game "sight unseen" based on Sid Meiers "reputation" and my expectations however.

                    Not Infogrames but...

Is the problem about Infogrames or Firaxis?
Civ III is a completely different orientation than all previous Civs (SMAC included), which is breaking immersion (for me at least). This is a producer decision. Personnally, I don't know what's going on with Firaxis, but they fell from king of the hill to uncertain (mass market?) game maker.

So I would be considering more my loyalty over Firaxis than boycotting Infogrames, which I don't know exactly who they are. Infogrames looks like a publisher like every other publisher to me. Only Electronic Arts and some of these sorts are showing themselves as mediocre to me (rushing some games, crushing innovation for sure values, etc.).

I'd say that a boycott is foolish. If you don't like the games that Infrogames publishes, then don't buy them; if everybody does this, then it will probably convince them to publish good games and not bad games. However, if Infrogames publishes good games, then it's stupid to punish both you and them by not buying a game that you would enjoy.

The real lesson to be learned is to not buy a game until after it's been reviewed, either by professional reviewers (such as the reviewers in game magazines) or by the amateur reviewers on websites like this one.

What's biased about yes or no?

Bias is somewhat different from the pollster being hoisted on own his/her own petard by the unexpected results of public opinion. I enjoy those too.

I think it was just meant as another spam of the CTP1/2 addicts sort of those we have here twice a week.

But then if everyone did this, who is going to review the game? Frankly, I think the whole issue is rather silly. So what if I forked out $50 for a game that's not quite up to par, it's still cheap entertainment. I've spent more than that for a night on the town, and had nothing to show for it the next day but a hangover. If someone doesn't like the game as it is, it only means they won't be buying the XP. If Firaxis/Infrogrames, or any company for that matter, sees that an add-on isn't selling as well as they'd hoped, they'll probably rethink their approach for future releases.
