  • Playing as the Barbarians

My suggestion for improving the game is to make the barbarians open to be played by humans. What could be more fun, especially in multiplayer conditions, than preying on cities and shipping? To crush your enemies, see them driven before
you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!!
    Who's with me?
I would rule in the warrior tradition of Ghengis Khan, and my first act as barbarian king will be to abolish the spaceship and diplomatic victory conditions.

THis would be a decent idea for MP, let's see the leftie come up with reasons against it, rather than 'yawning'

              Re: Playing as the Barbarians

Let me explain why I'm so sleepy:

"My suggestion for improving the game is to make the barbarians open to be played by humans."

No problem with this, except: Where would they be based? How would they survive? What units would they use? How would they be different from a regular civ?

"hear the lamentations of their women!!"

Oh please. Give me a break!

              "Who's with me? "

This pounding guy should be banned!

"I would rule in the warrior tradition of Ghengis Khan, and my first act as barbarian king will be to abolish the spaceship and diplomatic victory conditions. "

Spaceship victory has been there from the original. It is as much a part of Civ as anything. (Reminder: Civ is not a wargame!)

              The mad guy looks constipated.

The reason I yawn is that this is another request that does not fit in with the true nature of a Civ game. If you all want it that's fine, but what is the point?
              Sorry....nothing to say!

                  Huh?

Give me details and you might convince me to join your cause.

I think the idea sucks, but that's just me, dont take it personnaly. But why dont you just go in the editor and make your own Barbarian civ?

                    Spec.

Hey, take it easy, if people want to suggest playing as Barbarians, why shouldn't they? I certainly would like the option, just to change things round a bit.
We all paid for the game, dammit! We should be allowed to express opinions on it.

(I'd just like to make it clear that I'm not actually annoyed with you, ACooper, I just think you should allow people to comment on the game if they so wish)

The idea really is, spec, a completely different paradigm than a conventional civ. No base, per se.
What I am really suggesting is an idea for the next incarnation of the game, rather than something that can be worked into the current model.
Not everyone wants to be a peaceful builder all the time, and this alternative, I thought, would be fun.
I would propose no research or any of the usual stuff (or have it scaled down) for the barbies- the idea being to raid and ransom your way to the top.
I realize that this is too radical for a lot of folks, but oh well. I never could understand the traditionalist's point of view- their reason for doing things in a particular manner is "we've always done it that way." Same with the spaceship thing- it was there before, so it should stay forever...

i think playing as barbarians in civ2 would ave so ruled. but it would suck in civ3.

It was possible in civ2, it just kind of didn't work very well. Your units would move by themselves unless you caught them first. It was quite strange.
