  • Are Coastal Cities Underpowered??

I feel that Coastal Cities are unpowered on Civ III, lets face it, a lot of the great cities in the world are on da coast.
How would we go about Solving this though? I mean currently when a city has a harbour all squares give 2 food... which is like grassland... but grassland without a shield isnt all taht good anyway. Perhaps Whales should be better?? Fish give even more food after a harbour???

You could edit the Harbor and split it into several improvements, each one being rather cheap.

Dock (Map making) - Food bonus
Trade Port (Map making) - Water trade
Naval Regiment (Navigation) - Veteran ships
Fishing Industry (Steam Power) - Additional food bonus

You could also add another Fish resource.
The difference between industrial society and information society:
In an industrial society you take a shower when you have come home from work.
In an information society you take a shower before leaving for work.

cities right next to, but not able to build harbors and platforms are underpowered, unless like me you have changed their costal building requirement.

These polls are always so much better when there's a "Banannas" option.
Infograme: n: a message received and understood that produces certain anger, wrath, and scorn in its recipient. (Don't believe me? Look up 'info' and 'grame' at dictionary.com.)

All my costal cities eat Banannas.

increase the trade bonus of ocean/sea squares

            this should "fix" things

another minor fix might be to have an oil platform improvement at an earlier time.

I was first tempted to vote for the bananas but finally chosed the 3 rd option. They are just OK as they are. I have many coastal cities in my small landmass games.

Did they do away with Whales? They used to give a shield...

They still do. And if you have the off-shore platform, they give two shields.

Whales aren't as prevalent in civ3 though, and they seem to be further out. Even so I wouldn't say coastal cities are underpowered; they have their place. Its just that their place is rarely being a production powerhouse.

One of the benefits of a coastal city is that it can build the Colossus.
I like CIV 3's corruption, combat system, cultural assimilation and AI.
