  • Favorite Units

Ok, this subject may have already been posted knowing my luck, but what are your favorite units for each age? Mine are:

    Ancient: Swordsmen
    Midevial: Musketman
Industrial: Marine (that's in the industrial part isn't it??)
    Modern: Modern Tank

Ancient - Depends, is often a Unique Unit (Mounted Warrior, Immortal), but otherwise horsemen.

    Medieval - Knights/Cavalry

    Industrial - Tanks, mabye Battleships

Modern - Modern Armor all the way

    -Arrian
grog want tank...Grog Want Tank... GROG WANT TANK!

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

As there's only a couple of roads of upgrades through the ages (with the exception of swordsman) this isnt going to be a particularly interesting thread

I like attack units, so horses and tanks

I love the swordsmen and the knights. I usually stop playing after medieval, so can't say much about the later stuff (although I liked the marines, tanks and paratroopers when I played a long game). Some of the civ-specific units are cool, too, like the attack elephant (or whatever it's called) for India and the immortals for Persia.

Ancient: Spearman. He's the mainstay of the armed forces, and can be upgraded all the way to Mechanized Infantry.
Medieval: The Knight. Duh. A mounted unit with excellent attack.
Industrial: Cavalry, Armours, anything that moves and shoots.
Modern Age: Modern Armour. Get tens of them and blast away. Though the nukes come a good second place, especially when you have enough of them to nuke your foe's every city twice when he/she nukes maybe your capitol.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Like Flight said, there's just too few lines, which is why I'd like to be able to add more units in the editor.

The only units I ever build by choice (i.e., I'll build others if I lack a resource), other than the basic defensive units, are Knights, Cavalry, Tanks, Modern Armor, and the air/sea units (see a trend?). Marines I only use if I absolutely have to (the 1-square island cities), since they're at the same point technologically as Tanks.

Currently I'm working on editing the tech tree to make this less blatant.

Interesting you mentioned mukes. I'ev had one game where I have go far enough to get them and when I launched a few, they never killed everything in the city like they did the first time I made an attack with them. Does the effectiveness of a nuclear strike depend on the terrain?

Even that way taking such cities in same turn is much easier.
You probably won't lost any tank (all remaining units are heaviliy injured).
At lesat, now nukes destoy buildings (not in Civ3, CTP).

Samurai are fast and bypass the pikeman bonus vs. mounted troops.

I like cavalry in general. I'd like to see a special unit for a civ that's cav +1 attack.

Panzers rule. Great reach and safer for taking out fortified infantry than the tank.
                  Above all, avoid zeal. --Tallyrand.

The Samurai are definately killer - I played a game as the Japanese, and I was unstoppable with them.

Knights/Cavalry are great, too... but I dislike that they don't upgrade any further. The Horseman is always the foundation of my offensive armies, and it kind of bites that I have to trash all of them for tanks if I go late into the game. I would also like to see a better upgrade path for Swordsmen... why is it only one path to Rifleman? Why not allow Swordsmen AND Musketmen this upgrade?

I haven't played with too many other Civ's aside from the Americans, so I don't even know how good the F-15 is compared to a regular jet fighter. I've tried the Romans, and the Legion is a good unit, and comes pretty quick in the game. I'm thinking of checking out the German Panzer next... although I've read many good things about the Persian Immortals (there's just something that bugs me about the pants - although they gave me fits when I was trying to beat them playing as the English).

Speaking of the English - the Man O' War is just about useless unless you're engaged in an early naval campaign. I prefer late-game naval bombardment from carriers.

The Immortals are great - even the sound they make pulling their swords out when they fortify is cool.

                          Riflemen.

                          Gotta love the industrial age

but the Immortals is a damn strong unit, considering the attack value of 4 long before any other civ would have the knight available

Privateers. Now if only they had realistic stats...
"If Lincoln were alive today, he'd probably want to get out of his tomb"
"He siezed power in a bloodless coup -- all smotherings."

Agreed! Privateers would be SOOO much better if they didn't suck!

I was trying to 'play nice' one game... huge map... just wanted to hog that last unexplored little continent for myself... figure I surround it with privateers to keep anyone else away while I settle it...

But, noooo... a 2hp Barbarian galley can whack a veteran Privateer, it seems... My "diplomatically immune" blocade was nothing more formidable than that stupid paper banner that high school cheerleaders hold up when the home team takes the field.
