  • Turns take for ever!

I am currently playing with huge map, large continents, 16 civs at Monarchy level. I am at the end of the 17th century in the middle of the Industrial Age, researching Atomic Theory, cities size 8-12.
From Press Enter or Space Bar for next turn to the next turn actually starting now takes 10 minutes!
My computer is just over 2 years old, PIII, 500MHz, 128mb Ram using Windows 98
Is this a bug in the programme or do I need a more powerful computer to cope with all the work necessary between turns at this stage on such a big map? (I note from the game documentation that minimum computer spec is PII 300MHz)
    Any ideas?

It's not a bug, the computer simply has to go through ALL the moves and options of the other Civs, just like it does for yours. So the more Civs you have, the longer it's going to take.

Frankly I don't think 16 Civs is really practicle, unless of course you don't mind taking a year or two to play a single game.

      1. Downsize your map size and/or number of civs. I do not know which would be the larger factor.

      2. Time for yet another computer upgrade(?)

I am using a 1.3GHz P3, large map, 10 civs and it takes just a couple minutes between turns, including showing other's moves (no animations). Oops -- STARTED with 10 civs, now it's 6.

      3. If you start with 16 civs, put a priority on DESTROYING some of them earlier in the game.

        Tips for faster play:

        1. Turn off all animations.

        2. Reduce your map to the smallest possible size.

        3. Don't build any workers.

        4. Keep your empire as small as possible.

        5. Play with only a couple of rival tribes.

        6. Fortify military units the instant they're built, and never activate them again.

        7. Upgrade your system to a Cray 9000.

        8. Try to avoid all contact with other civilizations.

        9. Don't build any production improvements.

        10. Retire early.

        Enjoy your game!

If you don't like the f****** game, get off this site and do something constructive with your life besides *****ing!!!

It's beginning to appear to me that your concept of "Libertarian" is "My way or the highway". Or maybe you're one of those people who just like to hear the sound of their own voice. Metaphorically speaking of course. Either way, you're becoming extremely annoying, IMHO. I'm reminded of an old saying, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Firaxis has always said the game will "officially" support 8 civs (inclucing yours).

That's what the requirements were based on. If you want to double that number then you will have longer wait times.
                Sorry....nothing to say!

Yeah, "officially" support 8 civs on a **tiny map**. Why offer bigger maps and more competition if your game cannot handle it?

That was one of Firaxis' major announcements a few months back.."HUGE MAPS!!!! UP TO 16 CIVS!!!!!" Gimme a break. Don't give the option if you can't support it.

It's a little hard to ignore him when he keeps imposing his opinions all over the place! I respect freedom of expression as much as anyone else, but I feel I have to draw a line when the only comments made are so vitriolic.

IT'S JUST A GAME!!! If he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to play it! Why devote SO MUCH energy trying convince others to share his opinion!

                        Mwuahhahahahaha

Its funny with my 1.4 ghz athlon the 16 civs only take about 10 seconds later in the game =-P.

Seriously though, get a little patience. I'd gladly wait 2 minutes each turn if I must. After all remember you must not have anything important to do if your playing a game. So relax and read or just plain enjoy life while ya wait.

Libertarian is funny, Willem you need to see a therapist about your problem with your attitude.

Your welcome for my advice Sincerely,

No, officially it supports 8 civs on any size map. Hint: that's why the diplomacy screen only has 8 places....

Remember, I didn't say it didn't suck I just said that that's what they "officailly" support
