I think the worst error people are making is to play on very huge maps.
Smaller maps are much more fun to play since the phase where you expand is held shorter and every city has a much greater value. Also you dont get so much units to move around then, or you dont need to.
Dont mistake Civ3 for Work. Civ3 is a game and should be handled as a game. If you want to spend real much energy do spend it in your work.
95% of the games get boring when you are mistaking them for work and putting your whole energy into it.
I only play occassionally on smaller maps and it does make great fun.
If you are hardcore civ player I guess you should relax. Give it a break and then try again.
I guess if you are a hardcore civer civ3 might not be for you. If you are an occasional player I think it is great.
The only thing that bugs me are some interface decisions and the problem that I cant sink ships with planes. But apart from that I cant say I get annoyed very often because I play less often. Overall it does make fun though
Ah yes and play in parts.
Play your game in 3-4 parts and between the parts think about strategy and stuff like that and think what your chances are what you can do next.
Talk with other civers what you could do in this situation.
Best is you stop in such situations where it gets real difficult. (e.g.: no oil and nobody willing to trade). Take a break and think. And then play on.
I hope it might help someone,
