  • Workers on Automatic.

    Hello,

I was just wondering what the thoughts are on using the Automate feature with workers? I personally am manually
using the settlers when my empire is small, but as soon as it's
a medium size (10 cities) or large (20+ cities) im well over half on
    automatic.

    What do you all think?

Dont, its not worth the headache.

The eagle's wings are silken, but its claws are made of steel. So be warned, you would-be hunters, attack it and you die, For the eagle stands for freedom, and that will always fly.

Do, but in specific circumstances only.

Shift-P (clean pollution), but only for about 3-4 per polluted square (they'll go to the most 'appropriate' one -- which may not be what you want). If you go a turn without pollution, they'll revert to normal.

Haven't gone beyond that with any frequency, yet. I intend to continue to play around with them.

You can tell them not to undo stuff. Its either Shift-A, alt-A, or ctrl-A...I really can't remember and I'm at work now so I can't look it up.

I agree though about pollution AS LONG AS YOU HAVE RAILROADS. Do NOT automate the cleaning of pollution if you dont have coal. You will be amazed at the nightmarish results. So build railroads to or close to the major cities generating the pollution and Shift - P away! A friendly warning...

That's SHIFT-A for automating workers and at the same time telling them not to undo previous improvements. I never use just A (why would anyone?), always SHIFT-A.

After I get more than, say, 5-10 workers, I set them all on automate (SHIFT-A). In my last game, I had something like 60 workers in the end - if I would not have automated them, I guess I would still be moving them around...

One little tip, though: When your workers are about to start building railroads, give a few workers the command CTRL-SHIFT-R, and (while still holding CTRL) click on a city at the other end of your empire from where they are located. This will tell these workers to build a railroad from their current location to the city you clicked on, instead of just building railroads around the city they are located near. The end result will be a nice rail-network between your cities.

But the question remains: WHY are there food/shield bonuses for railroads, so that you have to build those UGLY things over every one of your beloved squares??? My suggestion for a mod, if possible, would be that railroad only gives the movement bonus, while there are "advanced mines" and "advanced farms", for the food/shield bonus. The effect would in the end be the same, but it would look a helluva lot better! Anyone agree?

                Peace!
