    Why use anything besides Democracy?

Because you may be playing a militaristic civ on a large/huge map
on monarch+ and are shooting for a domination victory?

When the riots start causing meltdowns or factories to be
destroyed, then you HAVE to shift to something more stable.

And yes, you can easily have a 50 turn war, especially if your AI "allies" decide to stab you in the back.

They went at great lengths to make the game very unrealistic, making sure that a war in a republic or democracy is next to impposible for whatever reason you are in a war.

        How is it impossible?

Republics work fine under any type of war- war weariness is next to negligable.

Democracies can fight excellent defensive wars as long as you don't get your ass kicked and if you don't carry the fight to the enemy.

This has been an illuminating discussion with some great ideas that hadn't occurred to me. I suppose that my original post makes obvious my slant towards isolationism and defensive warfare.

Rasputin - I can see how a constant state of war that you can't talk your way out of can be a pain in the ass, but I think that war weariness is such a situation is reasonable.

Ham50 - I disagree that wars in republic and democracy are unrealistic. Despite whatever gameplay faults it may have, I think Civ3 is far and away the most realistic game of its genre, and any more realism simply wouldn't be as much fun.
