It is my understanding that Firaxis doesn't even have a contract to make MP. It is still in the air as to whether it will even be made. That would be a tragedy.
I do think a ladder would be fun tough.
He said they were coming up with ideas for MP. Soren Johnson said thay dont have a contract to make and sell it. No matter how much working on it they do, it wont be made until a contract is signed.
I hope Fraxis does come out with a MP version because I absolutely refuse to pay full price for a game that doesn't have MP. Does anyone know why people were still playing Civ2 five years after it came out? I'll give you a hint they weren't playing single player...

It had better be made available in a patch. I refuse to shell out any money for an X-pack that enables a feature that was only dropped at the last minute.

The only reason to put it in a patch is if the regular game sales are sagging (meaning people won't pay for just the SP game.) Based on Civ1 and 2 experience, there gut feel is that MP will make more money if sold seperately. What makes you think they didn't finish it. Maybe they had it almost done but decided to extract more money by seperate sales. (This essentially was done in Civ2. They had lots of MP code in the game, but turned it off to keep civnet sales up and to allow a later MGE expansion.)
Those champions in the ladders also got a dubious title for "guys who had no social life or job commitment" (yeah, I know too you can save the MP game, but still the "wasted" time counts).
