  • Possible XP Bug ?

for the most part, the game runs flawlessly; i enjoy it quite a bit. (insert all that stuff about how it's better than ctp, as well as ctp2, which is what ctp should have been if they even wanted to crack the market here). (insert all that stuff about how the editor just flat out sucks, not being able to edit the civilization files to create species like the olympians or the koreans just by text).

aside: game seems to run slower on a p4/1.7ghz system +768mb ram +geforce3 nvidia card, and i'm not talking about the drivers... it's not the scrolling, i mean when i click on a city, or try to change advisors... it takes longer than what seems to be necessary. as if it's playing through molasses. i can only imagine how bad it might be on the p2/300 my brother uses.

    Now: Subject:

i've noticed that several times after i exit the game civilization 3, there seems to be a residual program running in the task manager. it is almost as if two copies of civ3 are running, but that should not be the case-- while i'm playing the game only one instance of the program is visible in the task manager. i'm also quite certain that i'm exiting the game through proper channels: clicking on the menu, saying exit game, and then yes, at which point the game screen shuts down.
but then, on the task manager, civ3 is still there, like some ex that just won't go away.
it's a pain, because sometimes i forget that it'll still be there, a specter, and then try to run something else, like, say, the geiss plugin for winamp 2.x, and geiss won't run because civ3's locked up the display drivers because the program still appears to be running.

    hm...

this seems to be a roundabout way of saying that for some reason, exiting civ3 doesn't really seem to shut down the program completely for me in winxp.

Have you seen the 2 threads on XP in the Help forum?

thanks, yin... the first didn't apply, really, it's the nvidia, which i already knew about.

the second one almost answers my question, but it doesn't.

        so...

i will be posting this there, though.

jeebus, go away for months from the forum and everything changes.

        nice to see you again.

Good seeing ya, too. Where'd you go? It seems despite the "Yes, the game will run fine on XP" claims, there are some problems to be worked out...

It works without problem on both of my XP Pro systems.

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with XP specifically, the problem also apparently happens on Windows 2000 to some people. It probably happens to some on 9x either, but they just can't see the processes listing.

well, i kinda lost interest in foruming once firaxis died.

owo was a blow, to lose firaxis so soon after...

besides, i'm at college now. the main reason i came back is because i am trying to avoid all of the damned work i have to do here at UoC, not to be confused with Zakharov's great and wonderful UoP.

I've encountered the same problem on my XP box. In the Task Manager/Close Program window (can't remember which it is called in XP) there is a Civilization3.exe running after closing the program. If I don't manually shut that down I cannot run Civ3 - for a long time I was having to reboot the machine after playing before I could start the game up again, then I saw that and found out that closing it ends the problem.

I playin Win98 emulation mode, BTW. If I don't, after the opening movie I get a black display, though the sound and buttons still work.

i have to remember to open task manager to shut it down completely.

it's just a hassle, really, nothing i'm seriously pissed about.

unfortunately, when i forget, winamp crashes, and it takes me a few to realize why.

maybe i should go back to sonique.

if only lycos hadn't killed it.
