  • Anyone built the Hoover Dam yet ? Want to know how it works.

Does it give the effect to ALL cities, or only those with rivers ?
And do any previous built power plant types vanish from any city ?
Can you still BUILD the other types ?

Stupid questions, should have tried it myself, yes. But it will take so looong till I get there, if the AI lets me that is....

(no cheatcodes, for testing out things ?)

Hey, that's not a stupid question - because it probably won't do anything! Just look up its description in the civlopedia, and flip a coin: If it's heads, the hoover dam will work according to the description. Tails, it will do something funky, like give you 5 billion gold a turn.

That's the best I can do, beta testing is a riot!

Well, I build the Hoover dam. Here are my impressions:

      (1) The Wonder works only on the continent you built it

      (2) You have in every city a hydro plant, no matter whether there is a river / coast or not. But what is strange that you don´t see the hydro plant in the city´s aerial view which do not have either a river or a coastline.

      (3) It does NOT prevent you to build another power station
in the city (for example coal plant or nuclear plant). Actually if you
build an extra plant it does not improve your production rate (which would be at least logical) I think this is a bug.

Hoover dam provides power to every city on the same continent. In effect it acts as a Hydro Power plant in every city. If you look at the aerial view of a land locked city it would look rather silly having a dam with no water in it

The Hydro power plant replaces other power plants for reasons of pollution, in the same way a solar plant will replace a Hydro plant. I makes sense that you cant have 5 different power plants in one city and collect the bonus from all of them.

i dont think its a bug, just misleading the user.. if he is stupid/careless enough to replace a plant with a lesser one, let him do that..

Since its The Hoover Dam that is providing all the power, there is no need to have Hydro plants in thoses cities, therefore it doesnt show up on the aerial view.

There should be NO production bonus either because the city is getting its power from the centralized Hoover Dam.

Thanks for all the answers !

              Additional questions:

Can you build a Nuclear plant (+150% factory or shields, dont remember) and get the full effect of it, or are u stuck with the 50% from the virtual Hydro plant (overriding the Nuclear) ?

If u had a coal plant before building the Dam, I suppose this would vanish, then ?

              thx again.

I built Hoover and it still allows me to build coal plants. Not sure why this is....

Every city on my continent in credited with a hydro plant in its improvements list. Therefore it seems to me that coal plants would be considered an obsolete improvement.
I'm not sure I understand all the complaining--the game is highly customizable.

I had coal plants in many cities and built the Hoover Dam later. I had to go to each of the affected cities to sell the pollution-generating coal plants, which were providing me with zero benefit. I definitely think this is a bug.

You would want to keep the coal plant technology because if you "aqquire" or settle a city on a different continent it wouldnt get any effect from the Hoover Dam.

The same applies as to why coal plants arent automatically replaced by the Dam, as cities on other continents would be stripped of their power plants.

                      It is a bug!

There are two possibilities for a sensible solution:

                      (1) Either: the non-hydro plants increase the total production, no matter if there is a hydro plant (or the Hoover Dam). Up to now,
there is not such an effect.

                      (2) Or: As soon as you build the Hoover Dam, you should not have the possibility to build other plants in the cities on same continent. Otherwise IMO this is not logical!

                      Conclusion: It is a bug.

I also went through all my cities and sold the coal plants after building Hoover Dam (I expected them to vanish).

To seque to another power issue: the Civlopedia states that nuclear plants may be built in cities that have water within their radius--specifically stating either fresh or salt. However, it appears that only cities with rivers within their radius could build these (I am not sure if an inland lake would suffice). However, cities with numerous coast/sea/oceans (i.e., salt water) within their radius--but no river--could not build these things. Am I reading this wrong, is it a Civlopedia mistake (as in the effect of railroads), or a bug?
I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue.

You might want to build a back-up power plant if you thought that the city with the Hoover Dam would be captured.
