First, i'd like to emphasize just how much i love the civ series. And i want it to be as good as possible.
now, my rant.
1. let sea and air bombardment sink ships. but never completely kill ground units(realistic.) EXCEPT other arty units. (counterbattery fire, see?) bring back the SMAC arty duels. so i can see two batteships, or a frigate and a shore battery, or BB and rocket arty plummel each other to death.
2. fix the oh so basic intercept and fortress bugs. quickly. before all other fixes. let this be a beta patch or sth!
3. let aegis cruisers and battleships fire on air units that enter it's ZOC and potentially shoot them down. (say...30% to wound, 20% to crit., 10% kill, 40% no effect)
4. make a AA battery[flight] and mobile sam [rocketry] unit to do the same for the ground.
5. airfields. nuff said.
6. ZOC should be a always trigger thing. i.e so one mech inf can fire on as many units that stray into it's zoc. to balance out the incredible amount of units the AI has.
oh, and for all those who think bombardment should kill ground units. look at any 20th century war. esp. WW1 and WW2. at no point was arty or bombers alone enough to wipe out divisions, or regiments. just look at the invasions of iwo jima or tarawa, or D-day, or the somme, or stalingrad etc. despite incredibly long and heavy artillery bombardments, there still remained enough enemy soldiers to put up resistence (granted, mostly the defending side still lost, but...............). in that sense, i find civ 3's system good. try Steel panthers or the talonsoft wargames for further proof that arty barrages are for support, not direct kill. even the fancy new us smart munitions can only do so much.
though i think units under bombardment in a city should lose the barracks heal ability....but it's a minor thing. seeing your arty has destroyed barracks is gratifying.
