  • how can i play *faster*?

    hi,

i bought civ3 a few days ago and have been playing it obsessively. the problem is, i've only managed 2 full games because they take me 8-12 hours *each*.

i know that part of the reason is because i micro-manage things too much, but there's gotta be some way for me to cut down how long each game takes! i remember civ2 games usually took me 3-5 hours a piece, which is still too long now that i'm not in university anymore and i have a life now too

for the record, here are the only timesavers i'm using:
    - turn off all movement animations
    - automate workers using shift-i or shift-a
    - use production queues as often as reasonable
    - use the govenor options to better choose city improvements

    gpf,

Simple. Dont build military units. Your game is guaranteed not to last longer than an hour

But seing as i dont have the game, i cant offer real advice.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

8-12 hours? WOW! I'm playing huge map 16 civs and I've probably played for close to 12 hours and I'm still around 1250 AD and about to finish the middle ages. Looks like you're already going pretty fast.

Hey Akron, just out of curiosity, how long is it taking to generate a new turn for you on a huge 16 civ game?

Was playing one today but finally stopped in the 1600's, it was taking 2-3 minutes to generate a new turn and I just don't like waiting that long. Gonna go back to 8 for now I think

          akron,

i guess 8-12 hours could be considered fast when playing on a huge map against 16 civs, but i was on a tiny map with only 2 AI opponents

incie: that's my only complain so far as well. though i think it has more to do with the size of the map, than it does the number of civs. but yet, i'm in the mid 1800's, and even though all of MY stuff goes fast, because 1 or 2 of the AI civs are at war with eachother, things take a LONG time. .

Here are a few tips to speed up the game:

              1. Tweak the worker rates using the editor. The idea behind this is that you'll need fewer workers later in the game if you've finished your improvements.
              2. Only use the "Auto-Improve Nearest City" command (SHIFT+I) for workers.
              3. Use the Governer.
              4. Kill off any enemy pocket cities.
              5. Kill off any enemy on your inhabited islands.
