  • My disappearing Coal

Ok so here's the question...I was happily building along in the industrial age, I had a nice lump of coal that I built a mine on, and had started building railways. Then all of a sudden I get a message that my coal was depleted and then I can't build anymore railways

I had not read that these resources could be depleted, does anyone know if these resources will deplete faster if you mine them?

Resources have a random chance of being depleted every turn; mining does not effect it as far as I know. I think I read somewhere that coal depletes faster than other resources.

I figured it must have been something like that. It is a pain to go to the trouble of fighting for a resource and then having it deplete like that. Realistic maybe, but sometimes realism can really piss me off.

Resource depletion probablity or even a certain number of turns "lifespan" is something needed in the editor.

Then you are out of coal. Honestly, I'm not sure if that will happen or not. Should be interesting to see......

By the way, in addition to depletion, there is also a random chance that any tile you (or another civ) is working will suddenly reveal a new source of a resource.

Should be under the Resources tab--there's a fraction of a percent chance every turn it's worked that it goes *poof!*

It would also seem that resources can appear just as they disappear. My first game I was in the midst of nothing but Dye deposits when suddenly I got a message about horses now being available. I looked around and and noticed a square that had a road through it now had horses in it too.

Hope this is a "feature" and not a bug.

I believe we've been told that if one resource depletes, another of the same type automatically replaces it somewhere in the world.

As above, I believe we have been told it's a feature. Also, if it were a bug, would you expect a nice popup telling you it had happened?

Personally I love the depletion thing. On large maps it may not mean much (oh no, I lost my Iron? Guess I'll just have to use one of my other five), but on small maps it's incredible. Having a resource pop up randomly or disappear randomly has a HUGE impact on the balance of power. I fought a big land war over one resource tile, and it was worth it.

I'm playing on a tiny map now, and there are a couple luxury resources (Gems and Silks) that aren't ANYWHERE in the world, and there's only two Coal squares in the world. Good thing they're both in my territory, along with three of the four Saltpeter deposits... heh heh heh.
