LOL, get the game now. Who cares its its $50 now and $20 later. Is $30 really that important? what are you gonna spend $30 on? some beer and pizza? three trips to the movies? who cares.

Second, if your monitors max resolution is 800 by 600.... um... I don't know what to say... I honestly didnt know they had color monitors that were only went as high as 800 by 600, thought 760 by 820 or whatever was lowest made in a long long time.

After the first year, unless its a wild hit, will be hard to find at any price. No one will be willing to order/manufactor it.

People aren't paying of "hype". "Hype" implies thats there is nothing but advertisement flash. The Civ3 marketting isn't that impressive. There hasn't been on serious review yet, and just a small number of previews.

People always pay top dollar for brand new toys. Its that way for games, hardware, software, toys, clothes, hell anything.

Maybe hype isnt the right word.

Some people have to get everything when its brand new because of their personality. Some people don't mind paying top dollar for things. But I'm sure not in that category. Blowing money isnt my style.

I'll let some of the novelty of being first wear off and get the game cheap. Perhaps even used.

The game is going to be just as good next year as it is tommorow. Theres no reason it wouldnt.

That is very true, drake. I, for one, always try hard to be part of the "out" crowd because impatiently wanting the latest and greatest (of any product) implies insecurity and immaturity, imo. There has never been a consumer product that I had to have. About 90% of the games that I have bought were at least 6-12 months after release and in the cases where I bought upon release (like Civ3), it just came down to the right timing among other games in my rotation list and things I got going on in my life (mainly house/yard projects).

Personally, I know of four places in town where you can get a good used 1024x768 15" monitor for $40, and I live in Ohio of all places. You can get a used 17" Trinitron capable of 1600x1200 for $85. There are several places online you can get a new monitor capable of 1280x1024 (either a good 15" or a cheap 17") for a about $125.

It's just hard to imagine a system capable of playing Civ3 where the only limitation was the monitor. 800x600 monitors were the standard in the days of the 80386, and 1024x768 monitors have been common for ten years.

I guess my priorities are different than most people, but every computer I've ever built has had a monitor that cost as much as the whole rest of the system. Not many things actually tax your CPU, but you stare at the monitor whenever you're using the computer. If your monitor can't display 1024x768, I doubt even 800x600 is flicker-free. That's bad for your eyes.

                  I just know if I had $500 total to spend on a system, I wouldn't spend $400 putting together a 1 GHz+ machine and get a $100 monitor. I would spend $200 on a Celeron 533 system and $300 on a flat 19" monitor that does 1600x1200 at 75Hz+.

So just look around, and I guarantee you'll find a decent used 15" monitor that does 1024x768 with a good refresh rate for no more than $50. If you're totally out of cash, you could get an old ATI card with a TV-Out for about $10, which will let you set 1024x768 pan-scan on a TV in 800x600 resolution, but that would probably drive you nuts after awhile.

If you're making do with such an old system, I'll just assume you're in high school. You could just ask all your relatives to go together and get you a monitor for Christmas... or you could spend the $40 you were going to spend on the game on a crappy used 1024x768 monitor and find someone who has CloneCD and a burner to make you a Civ3 copy... not that I would condone such actions.

And as for Solver hacking it to work in 800x600, that would be pretty difficult. Civ3 looks to be hard-coded into 1024x768 in the same way that SMAC was hard-coded into 800x600. You wouldn't just be changing a few values in the code. You'd have to scale all the graphics and rewrite a significant part of the interface.

I say to each his own.

Unfortunately, the producers/sellers of Civ3 have decided otherwise regarding this issue and chosen to make Europeans wait... if accepting their orders at all. Good job!

Though I dont have the problem of not having a good monitor, this is a VERY poor assumption. Most major sites still log 8x6 users as their highest percentage of users, with 10X7 usually in second. Civ has a younger audience no doubt, but there is a significant amount of older people (with old equipment) that play civ. And they are no more apt to buy a new monitor just for civ than is a high school kid without a job

                        their loss then..

while the default resolution may be 8x6 on most sites, i bet most of the hardware out there now supports better resolutions.

now i'm a firm believer in 'it it aint broke, dont fix it' but i do not think it is unreasonable to expect the average user to support 1024x758 these days. i'm sure the marketing ppl at civ3 did their research on the proof of concept and decieded that 10x7 was a reasonable requirement.

Civ III is actually kind of cheap. Here in Toronto, it is supposed to be CAN$49.99 for the regular edition. I can't ever remember buying a game for that much. Most games that I bought before were at least $60 when it comes out. Unless you are really short on cash, Civ III is actually one of thoese games that is worth getting right away (assuming online play doesn't stop you).
