Sadly, the designer's notes is what I always read first when I get a Civ game. Then I jump in head-first and try not to impale myself on the monitor.

I'm pretty sure Brazil was there before him. He just pointed out where it was on the map
"We of the British Empire have come to claim this desolate and uninhabitated la..."
"Excuse me"
"Yes what is it? Can't you see I'm busy?"
"Well. This land isn't uninhabitated. We live here ( hold up native certificate of authenticity) This is our country"
"Oh I see.......... Have you got a FLAG?"
"No."
"Well you can't have a country! No flag, no country. That's the rules I just...... made up"

He discovered it, because it wasn't knowed yet by the knowed world!
He didn't "just pointed out"! You can still make that today, and that doesn't mean you are doing anything new!
By your order of ideas then Electricity wasn't discovered because it already existed in the thunders!
So perhaps nothing was discovered? See what i mean?

I'll want to find out for sure exactly how combat, trade and culture really do work in the release version of the game. If I've not had time to read all about it in the manual on the way back from the shop, then I might consider the tutorial. Probably more likely to do so if it comes in chapters so I can skip the 'this is your first settler' bit and move straight to the technicalities. To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

I will use the in game tutorial rather than a separate 'saved game' one. I.E. the pop up message that says 'This would make a good place to build a city'. Then I can tell it to get lost and do my own thing!'No room for human error, and really it's thousands of times safer than letting drivers do it. But the one in ten million has come up once again, and the the cause of the accident is sits, something in the silicon.' - The Gold Coast - Kim Stanley Robinson

( yeah, I have played it, am I a geek now? ),
the last game I have actually bought.
Tutorials are handy in new games that are
a bit more complicated than Tetris and Mahjong.
Honestly, if the Civ III tutorial is good, I'm
sure that I'm going to let the tutorial work as my
guide into the new world of Civ III. Or then I still
might just stick to the BTE's handbook(s) and
printed techmap."Kids, don't listen to uncle Solver unless you want your parents to spank you." - Solver

I will definitely allow the tutorial to roll for the first game (on Chieftain)...until I get to that point where I feel like the tutorial isn't teaching me anything...then off it goes! I will use it basically to teach me what does what, and what is what, etc. After that I will hope that I remember what the buttons do and I will roll out to do battle with the powers of at least Prince level...maybe higher. Unless of course I find that I am completely lost...then I will play two games and hope I do not get so frustrated that I loose interest in the game.....of course Sid Meier would never do that to me!

As I recall, the Civ2 tutorial walked you through the first few turns of the game, but around the time you founded your second city, it basically said something like 'Well now you know how to play. Keep expanding, building units, and researching tech and have fun!'. So if that is the same I will do the tutorial up to that point then start a REAL game
