I currently have a laptop that only displays 800x600, but I have hooked up an external monitor that can display the high res. It looks funny as hell with all of this hardware on my desk but I will not be denied my Civ 3. Peace...

      I'm posting from a laptop with a 15" screen at a 1600x1200 resolution.

Hell, I could fit four 800x600 screens on this thing.

        Geek response here. Sorry.

Resolution has nothing to do with the size of fonts on your screen. It depends how large civ wants to make the fonts, but it is possible to have a 1024x768 screen with very sharp detail, and make everything rather large.

For instance, you can turn your browser up to 1024x768 and increase the font size until it looks insanely too big, even at that resolution.

I'm sure it'll be very playable on your sorry 15" monitor

At least more visible than if you were running Windows at 1024x768. It should also be obvious that the game will not require you to change your Windows resolution, as this is handled within DirectX.

I don't see a problem. It's a fallacy to believe resolution is directly related to the size of text. It is related to how jagged the pixels will be

Well I don't think I have any concerns on my nice flatscreen 17" monitor, I generally tend to use 1280x1024 on this thing.

I'm using 1280x1024 on my 17" Trinitron and I can't imagine ever using a lower resolution. In a few weeks, it'll get turned DOWN to play civ. I guess my problem is kinda the opposite of everyone else's.

Go LaRussO! Give me 800x600! 1024 tends to hurt eyes. 800x600!!!

I am in the same boat as sabre2th...although lets hope that 1024x768 is the minimum resolution and that you can select higher resolutions; it would be good to be able to see more of the map at once, although it isn't really much of an issue for us, I can cope with 1024x768...

I have a 15'' monitor, so the 1024 issue concerns me. I already had a bad eyesight and don't want to make it worse . So I think it would be really sensible of Firaxis to include 800X600 mode in a future patch.
OTOH, judging from the screenshots it will not be that bad (keep in mind that you have to expand them to 1024X768).

On a nice monitor, it would be good.

you won't have to turn it down manually though, a DirectX application change change resolution by itself....not sure if everyone gets that.

I don't have to change it manually, no, but it does get changed.

One thing that people seem to forget is that the game will not look the same as windows does at that resolution. Just because windows hurts your eyes doesn't mean the game will.

I agree, 768x1024 is too much, we should be able to play without monitors
