  • To be "Loved" or "Feared"?

I know that it all depend on what strategy you have in mind when you start a new game, but as a theme in your game, I would like to have your view on the following. What do you consider being the best: To be Loved or Feared by your opponents when you are going to play Civ 3? (Of course when you are playing single mode against the PC).
My answer is clear: A mix of both seems to be the best - whatever your strategy seems to be!

I'm a peaceful nature. So I guess the best for me is to be loved! Another thing is that when I play Civ1 and 2, I always have to few units to have war, untill the industrial times...I have problems with the production rates if not... And I know the really good players are laughting when they read this... But who cares!

Didn't Machiavelli say that a combination of both would be best, but if that is not possible, then it is better to be feared. I should know, I read The Prince for a class this last weekend.

Mix. Loved for being superior, feared for being superior. Be friendly and civilized and know tour place, and I'll be lovely. Step on my toes and I'll trample on your head.

The role I play depends on whether the AI should have reason to fear me. If it annoys me then I will make it fear me, if it stays out of my way or gives me tributes I will reward its loyalty.

I think it depends on how ruthless you can be. With CivII for instance, I had no qualms about breaking a treaty or starting a war if I knew I could descimate the enemy into nothing but history.

With CivIII I just don't know if I could beat on Ghandi - he just looks so cute and lovable. Then again, a mean Ghandi is pretty scary.

I think for me it is better to be Feared though. I almost always go the peaveful route so the feared route is more of a challenge for me. Since it is more difficult, it must be better.
