  • I'm worried about more than the higher resolution...

I was upset to read that the system requirements for Civ3 include putting Directx8 on your computer.

I've read horror stories about Dx8 on Dell Talk and on the Directx newsgroup. It can make some of your games unplayable. And cause other problems. And what is bad is that it is very, very hard to uninstall it and go back to Directx7. (You may have to do a complete reinstall of your OS.)

Now you might think my computers are old. They are not. My Dell desktop is 15 months old, has GeForce graphics and a Turtle Beach sound card. And my laptop is an Inspiron 8000 with GeForce2Go graphics which I bought in May.

Both of my computers came with Directx7. They work great. Yet, I keep reading how Dx8 does not always work with your graphic card or sound card.

I wrote to the Civ3.com site. But have never heard from them.

I want Civ3 very much. But I hesitate putting Dx8 on my computers for fear I will have problems.

What do you all think about Dx8?

So am I the only one here worried about putting DirectX8 on my computer?

I haven't had any problems with direct X 8. It shouldn't be a problem if you just update the important drivers.

I have DX8.0a installed and all my games play fine. Just because one person has problems with DirectX doesn't mean the majority do.

              Likewise. No problems at all.

I am a gamedeveloper and I stay up to date on directx developements and have never heard of or had any problems myself with directx8. You are just being extremely paranoid for no reason.

No problems here. I use Dx8 on my old P200 and it came preinstalled on my P4 1.3. Not a single problem. Ever.

Of course the beta version is going to have a couple of problems. No software ever made has been flawless and unchanged from alpha to release.

The only serious problem with Dx8 seems to be that they ditched the original directdraw routines for the classic 2D games. Some 2D games optimized for an older DXx version might not run smoothly (or not at all).

CapTVK, that is totally incorrect. Directx8 includes all versions of directx, when you install any version of dx you are installing all previous versions aswell, so installing directx8 you are installing dx1 - dx8. A game that was written for dx6.1 will use only dx6.1, it cant use dx8, that is why dx includes all versions of previous dx releases. Installing dx8 will not in any way affect any older games, it just allows you to play newer games that require dx8.
