Looking at the city names that appear on the map now, it seems there is a lot of information that is available at a glance. The large number to the left is most certainly population, and a star appears on the right for the capital. Below the name is the production and turns until completion. One question, though: what is the number next to the city name? Is it the turns until population growth? And what exactly is that thing that looks like a green thermometer sticking out of the city?

yes. turns until pop growth.
says "growth in 1 turn" near the foodstuffs, and had a 1 in that area.
and i have no idea what that thermometer is."I've lived too long with pain. I won't know who I am without it. We have to leave this place, I am almost happy here."

Actually, I was going to post that very screenshot. Congratulations, UberKruX.
BTW, has anyone noticed that it´s obviously not possible anymore to convert commerce to luxuries?"As far as general advice on mod-making: Go slow as far as adding new things to the game until you have the basic game all smoothed out ... Make sure the things you change are really imbalances and not just something that doesn't fit with your particular style of play." - WesW

The 'thermometer' is the health of the unit... you know like the thermometer in Civ2 next to each unit?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
