OK, the thread below asks for opinions about the graphics and generally they weren't that favourable. So come on - what little touches would you add to improve things. Bearing in mind that this is a tile based engine(?), so there is a limit.
Maybe this has been done to death in which case my apologies. But it beats discussing the box IMHO
Couple of ideas.
- checkpoints at the borders, whenever a road crosses between two territories. Could even indicate diplomatic status - raised for peace, lowered for neutral, lowered with guards for hostile. Purely decorative/reminder guards that is, no defense function.
- towns. Would have to be small compared to the cities (but they look pretty big so this shouldnt be too hard. Maybe irrigating and putting a road through a tile would automatically generate a town. Again pure eye candy, no economic benefit but I think it would add to the effect of a sprawling empire. Just like in real life the cities would be the major commerce/science/culture hubs but not everyone lives in a city
