  • Railroads and Airplanes

Alright, here's the question, which would you prefer:

Infinite Railroad movement as currently is
Finite Railroad movement (like roads but longer)

Infinite Airplane Refuel, as long as in airbase or city, but with only a set number of attacks (can't attack, refuel, attack, refuel...)
    Finite Airplane refuel (current system)

Now implicit to this poll is that all choices are options, the poll is just your personal preference

Infinite RR / Infinite Air Refuel

Finite RR / Infinite Air Refuel

Infinite RR / Finite Air Refuel (Civ2, SMAC)

My personal preference is to infinite RR and infinite air refuel...

Why...Because one of the largest complaint's I've noticed is that airplanes take 5 years to circle the globe.

One of the biggest complaints against infinite RR movement is the massive RR web the AI's made in Civ2. This wasn't a problem in SMAC. Also I feel that by creating battle damage of the terrain improvements and making the AI smarter (not making wasteful RR's everywhere) the infinite RR problem is fixed.

Again, I have no MP experience, I don't know how large the problem was in MP, but I think SP and MP SMAC veterans would be a good litmus for how large a problem it will be in Civ3

I think for railroad should be worth 1/10 of a point to give an infinite railraod feeling but slightly stopping the great effects of blitzkriegs while not taking away the full effect of blitzkriegs. Air movement should be that you have to refuel after being out of a city or airbase for 3 turns. Meaning that you would have three turns to attack then you would have to refuel.
However, it is difficult to believe that 2 times 2 does not equal 4; does that make it true? On the other hand, is it really so difficult simply to accept everything that one has been brought up on and that has gradually struck deep roots – what is considered truth in the circle of moreover, really comforts and elevates man? Is that more difficult than to strike new paths, fighting the habitual, experiencing the insecurity of independence and the frequent wavering of one’s feelings and even one’s conscience, proceeding often without any consolation, but ever with the eternal goal of the true, the beautiful, and the good? - F.N.

I think that you should be able to adjust both things, but for the default in the regular game I say finite both.

Alright, I've seen enough debate on this so before however with no mention of airplanes and their movement intertwined with railroads, so....Bump

-Railroads should have finite movement... has anyone here EVER seen a railroad that did not have to refuel in a trip across 2000 miles?

-Airplanes should have infinite movement because they can travel great distances (greater than railroads) without refueling.

Who cares about refueling? Remember that we're operating on a global scale here. Allow infinite moves/finite attacks for the planes, but don't let them move further than a certain "range" from any of their cities/airbases.

I have no problem with infinite movement on railroad within your borders. The logistical preparation is plausible. However if you are in an enemy's territory a restricted movement cost should be made.

IIRC certain countries built their raliways to a different gauge so that it would be harder for them to be invaded. The enemy would not be able to bring in support troops by train directly or easily.

The refuel time hardly even makes a difference. The last time I took a long train trip, the refuelling took 1/2 hr. out of 24 hrs.

It's definately true that air units can cover large distances very quickly and that they have a much longer range than ground units, but it's much better for gameplay if they're limited.
