  • Civ-3 will have 82 techs in 4 ages

I looked at the 10 minute video and counted to 21 ancient age techs + 22 middle-age techs + 22 industrial age techs + 17 modern era techs, which summarize into a grand total of 82 techs.

Conclusion: with only 17 modern era techs, this pretty much confirms that Civ-3 wont move past 2020 AD. No SciFi-stuff in the main game.

And, oh - the Greeks will most definitely be in. 100% confirmed.

They can perhaps add more last-minute modern-era tecs - I dont know.

But, the guy in the video summarized the modern-era section of the tech-tree, in such a "thats it, lets move on..." kind of way, that I am pretty convinced that a fifth "future era" section is extremely unlikely.
This added with a Sid Meier interview + another game-magazine preview, there it gets specifically stated that the timeline will infact end 2020 AD.

If they are 85% complete, then all they are doing is tweaking the game. Maybe a small change here or remove something there but no major changes to be sure.
Think about this for a moment. When did they sign the contract (date) to make the game? However what if they started to work on the game as soon as Hasbro contacted them with the proposal to make the game. That time frame has never been discussed in public. So they could have been working on the game a few months before they signed the contacts. Another thing that may have help them is the unit graphic from TOT. All they would have to do to some of them is upgrade the unit to look like the units we will see in the game. The warrior unit in TOT is not that far off from the new warrior unit.

I just read on that Computer Gaming Online site that now we will have to complete all discovery at a given level before researching the next level.

RALF: i don't think thats what he meant - i mean about the modern era.

manofthehour: during the video, the screen shows the tech tree on four different screens - one for each age. Ralf, with the non-existent life he has put his time into counting each tech on each screen. And for his hard work, he was mentioned on the apolyton civ3 site.

Joseph: That isn't a totally correct preview. Firaxis has themselves said that you don't have to get the "cultural/arts" techs to move to the next age. But you do have to get all the major industrial/technical discoveries before moving to the next "age".
