I've fought exactly one nuclear war ever in CivIII, and that was for the express purpose of seeing the nuke graphics (which I personally prefer to the CivII ones).
My games are usually over 'fore the AI gets any nuclear arsenals.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?
It's no good (from an evolutionary point of view) to have the physique of Tarzan if you have the sex drive of a philosopher. -- Michael Ruse
The Nedaverse I can accept, but not the Berzaverse. There can only be so many alternate realities. -- Elok

In epic games, this is true. However, I've played a number of Future Era Start games with the AI where I have space race, diplomatic, cultural, and wonder victories all disabled (can only win by conquest or domination). I like drawing such maps to be very rough... a mostly desert map, a mostly tundra map, a mostly jungle map, a most hills/mountains/volcanoes map, etc. It's a lot of fun.

Hannibal went psycho on me one game, PTW. I had made peace after taking everything I wanted from Carthage, including Carthage itself, but still had active MPP's with Japan and the Ottomans. Carthage attacks the Ottomans, pulling me back into the war, then launches eight ICBMs at Oakland and Bayt Ras, two of my minor resource towns (six interceptred by SMD). Persia, Japan and the Ottomans unleash on Hannibal, literally bombing every one of his cities to size one or two and killing most of his units. By the time it was my turn, I was the only world power with nukes and had suffered only minor losses. I found this sentence in my game history:
"The Ottomans show particular targeting ineptitude, continuing to launch missiles at Leptis Magna after it had already been reduced to a primitive village with no defenses."
I had forgotten about it, but they made sure to launch every ICBM they had, even though there was no more possible damage to be done.
I can remember playing a Civ1 game into the late, late hours of the night. It was very quiet, and I was concentrating hard on the game. Suddenly, I hear the loud "boom" of a nuclear bomb going off in my capital. One of the races suddenly declared war on me by laying waste to my civilization. Scared the crap out of me!

You're safe. The Anglo-American Alliance has been relatively solid for the better part of a century.

I miss that.
I don't.
I miss Civ1, but that's something I don't miss.
