  • Assistance required for the new guy

Good day and excuse me for asking what may appear as rookie questions but I am somewhat frustrated and need some help

As a first time player, here are the questions I have

    1) while reviewing the advances trees, I noticed a "stop" symbol in grey in the upper right hand corner of certain advances, what does that indicate?
    2) How does one complete small wonders since I have never seen one?
    3) Do resources magically appear or can I "mine" them?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. If there is another forum that would be better to search out these answers, I would welcome that knowledge as well.

Heck, I would welcome any tidbits of information just to beat back the Celts that I am facing

    1) That indicates that it is not needed for era advancement. eg Republic, monarchy, economics. Usually they offer an advantage, like a new governmet, or wonder

    2) Small wonders can be built by any city, (if you have the resource/s) like a normal unit or improvement

3)resources appear when you have the required tech, eg Iron workin reveals iron, the wheel reveals horses. To us the resources you must have a road leading from the resource to your cities.

Heck, I would welcome any tidbits of information just to beat back the Celts that I am facing
Post a game. Lots of people will help you.

A little bit more on #2, most small wonders also have an extra requirement. For example the Wall Street small wonder requires five stock exchanges have already been built in your cities. The Forbidden Palace requires a certain number of cities that have been built (dependent on map size), etc.

As to posting save games, like Krill said there are many people here who would be happy to help you improve your game.

        Zamboni,

You could also read some of the threads in the MUST READ section of the Strat forum. They helped me.

EDIT: I really need to learn how to link.

One other thing, Zamboni... rookie questions are part of what these fora are all about. Anybody that minds answering them will simply not respond, and you'll find plenty of experts, like Rhothy, that don't mind answering them at all.

Heck, I wish I'd known about 'Poly when I played my first game and was trying to use my workers to road to that distant cow so I could use it, and getting mad because I couldn't colonize that wheat inside my borders but outside my city radius.

What!!! you didn't know about the almighty colony !!!

If there is another forum that would be better to search out these answers, I would welcome that knowledge as well.

Nope, 'Poly is the only one.
...well, it isn't the only one, but it is THE one.

I wanted so badly to be able to use this cool seeming new feature I had the button for. Manual? Civilopedia? Bah, what can those things tell me...

Another good civ forum is Civfanatics.com. I personally like this one better though. However, if you decide to get into modding your game, Civfanatics is a bit more lively in their creation forum for some reason.

"Yes CFC is a solid civ site."

Really? I don't like the site personally. The graphics are more intimadating, and it doesn't seem as friendly. Compare AU games to GOTM (Game of the Month). More competitive.

Not liking it - and I don't care much for it either - does not mean they do not have there strongpoints too.

Willem is IMHO correct in saying that as far as modding etc. CFC probably is superior to 'poly.

Poly is much more fun though. Also I assume/guess that the average age on 'poly is higher.

                          Ha, Ha alva.

Yes, I will admit that it has its' good points; I have membership, so I can Download scenarios, mods etc.

It's just that I believe that this game should be fun, not competitive. That's the land of Unreal '04.

What is there to not like? Lots of good articles, many are from our own people. Gotm has been something to at least read about.

I only posted a few times, but still it is surely a good reference site for Civ.

Well, what is the average age on poly? The poll showed recently the average age on CivFanatics was 30s (which is my current age)
Game is just for Fun. Dont play the game if its not fun for you - binyo66 :)
