Does anyone know what the "Requires Escort" option in the Unit - Rules - Editor really means? (for C3C)

The Help file states that a unit with this option enabled will not be able to leave it's port without a Naval Power escort. However - I've built these units and saw no such restriction. Example: Aircraft Carriers - they "require escort" yet they are able to sail right out of port with no escort whatsoever.

    Anyone know anything about this???

    Thanks for your help.

It applies only to the AI.

Haven't you noticed how the AI protects its transports and carriers with sometimes multiple naval power units now?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it may also apply to treasure units in the Conquests. For example in the Age of Discovery conquest you receive 1000 victory points by bringing treasure home to your capitol...by settling colonies on specific resources (sugar, etc.) and building the appropriate colonial building (sugar plantation), which produces a treasure unit). However, these treasure units cannot move by themselves. They must be picked up by a military unit (pikeman, etc.) and only then can they be taken to your capital for the victory points.

But I'm not 100% positive that it's the option you're talking about as I have not mucked around too much in the .biq files of the conquests.

Good guess, but treasure units have another ability, flag unit, instead.

Not just Apolyton, but where would Firaxis get their inspiration from?

I had thought that this was used for settlers, artillery units, ect, as well. I hope that is the case, but I am probably mistaken.

It seemed that setters nearly always got an escort anyway.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Speaking of aircraft carriers: does the AI actually use them, now?

They did. I saw US carriers attacked Iroq. They bombarded Iroq cities (Iroq had 2 cities), and both were on small Islands with my 3 cities. But it was on Civ III 1.07f.

Yes and it is painful. They will escort them with 3 units.
