Civ 2 as in TWO? This is the Civ THREE forum. That said, if it is indeed Civ 2 then what is your platform? (Windows 98 etc.)

    Civ 2 = Windows 98
    Civ 3 = XP

    I hope this helps

A bit OT (of this post, which itself is OT, and mine is actually on topic to the forum ), but Civ3 doesn't require XP to play...you can use 98 or ME too.

Thanks, Switch I was stuck in 98 for years with Civ II and did not like that it did not go on to XP. However, I assumed no backward capability for Civ III.

Hmmm. I have Civ2 installed on my HP desktop and Sony laptop. Both have XP and it works fine. Then again, I only have Civ2 FW. I never did buy MGE.

My copies were so old; I never realized to rebuy them after XP came out. This opens new horizons...

My Civ3 doesn't work on Windows '98 - it installs but won't run.

I tested it, however, on a laptop with XP and it worked fine.
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

I have run CivIII, then PTW and C3C on my Win98SE system. I use it often when I have my XP system tied up.

I have not had Gold for some time, Test of Time works fine and it is basically the same thing.

I have the same thing with the Uni computers - only they are running NT 4.0 The problem there is that DirectX doesn't support that OS, so make sure you ahve the version of that that is required before trying Civ3.

Can't connect to the game machine? Wonder what that means? I know SMAX and possibly Civ2 sometimes have problems with XP. You may want to try those forums for help. Otherwise you may need to try another OS (if you ahve one around). Win 2000 works fine with basically every game I have ever tried, including DOS based games like Doom, although you need a sound emulator.

Whoop - just found this thread on Poly where yaroslave had the problem and fixed it. He disabled an XP program called 'Themes' that auto-started and it worked. Other potential solutions are posted there ny other people. He finds a better reason here also.
