And to think I was happy with with 8700 with PTW and my win last night on Conquests of 7800, both at Monarch. I figured I was average being a casual player, but looking at those scores I don't know how they did them.
Funny thing though I thought early wins were a key. But the game I finished last night. I was 3 turns away from the space ship and my nearest rival ROP raped me, took my capital and destroyed my ship. After taking my Capital back and taking some cities my core was hit with 2 waves af nukes. I retaliated and destroyed his ship and eventaually won by domination. But was surprised to win with that score. The score I beat out was a early win with knights, 4-500 AD.

I'm just happy when I win a game. I've never worried about scores.
Apparently, the highest 'rank' you can get is, "Magnificent".

Not trying to be rude in any way, but the reason that vmxa1 pointed to CFC is that the 'poly Civ3 community has just never really been into scores (partially 'cause it's a messed up system). The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

As Theseus says, the scoring system is pretty screwed up. The HOF is for players to show a mastery of a certain type of gameplay, but is by no means indicative of what is possible through other types of gameplay.
Recently the CFC HOF has been expanded to allow for the huge differences in score due entirely to mapsize, as well as to allow people to compete for fastest victory types instead of just score. This broadens the coverage of gameplay quite a bit, but still has it's limitations.
The best judge of how well a game is played is going to be yourself and your peers on these message boards. If you want to really know what the 'score' is, post your story and get feedback on what you did right, what you might have missed, and how to improve. Even in the HOF and GOTM, this is the real score, and in-game score (modified in whatever manner) is just a method to promote competition and comparison.
