Janet, I'd like to recommand you something:

There is an interesting project going on in the Civ3 Strategy Forum, called the Apolyton University Succession Games, or AUSG.

The link to the first game:

What is this about? Basically lots of people with different playing styles are playing the same game and are posting DARs (during action reports) of what they have done, how and why.
The players are divided in teams, but there is no competition between the teams; the difference is that each team has a different goal: a spacerace victory, or a domination victory, and so on.
There are a lot of screenshots there and detailed logs and explanations, you will love it.

Try focusing on one team (the opportunist team, for example) for now and read their reports. You will learn a lot. To quote from the link I provided to you:
The purpose of this modified succession game is twofold…learning and teaching, just like any other AU course.

      No, its limited by food

I do have one specific question - if I can't right click on an opponents unit I can't find a way of making contact. I've looked through all the advisors screens, it's probably just a keystroke I'm not aware of.
Click o nthe D in the little wondow bottom right of screen, No D there means you havent met anyone yet.

The other thing is the book says if I want to put an embassy in I should double click the capital city - who's theirs or mine - neither seems to work? is there another way?
Need the correct Technology to establiah embassys, read that manual agian, then click the Star next to your capital city name

As for the 9999 this is not widespread just a few - I guess I can live with that."

If no rioting, then it means they are at max. If they can built units, then they are at max. If they are size 6, they need an aqua. If they are size 12, they need a hospitol.

In PTW you double click your capitol. It will open a screen where you can see all the civs you have contact with. You can select one and choose the build embassy option.

If you save is less than 500K and it should be, you can attach it to your post. Then it would be easy to give the correct answer.
Just use the Browse to point to the location of the save and it will be posted. If over 500K you would have to use the upload facitity.

Makes you realise just how many buttons/screens etc there are in the game for newcomers to deal with. As for the embassy thing just press Shift-E.

If she has PTW. I think it's CTRL-E with vanilla Civ 3, IIRC.
