I play a lot of game in CIV3 and with PTW, but I have a problem. Most of my games end in 2050 time limit, sometime I (and other civ) still try to fly in the sky.

What is the trick to get more advance and try to fly. I build library and university (and the game I have a shot to space race, I win by culture before flight is found)

Any trick you can provide other than removing cultural and diplomacy victory?

That's a pretty open ended question. Developing techs involves a lot: trade with AI Civs, infrastructure, government type, tax/tech slider.... You might want to check out the strategy forum, maybe even post a save game for some constructive criticism.

Play at a higher difficulty. Research goes faster at emperor. Make contacts quickly. Research techs the AI is not shooting for and trade often.

Trading often is very effective at speeding research. If you get a tech lead you can help everyone's tech progress by selling/gifting your advances to everyone. Therefore the other civs are helping the whole world advance faster.

Of course, if you don't wish to or want to change your gaming tactics, you can set up the game so that cultural and diplomatic victories are turned off and increase the turn limit from 540 to 1000 (the maximum allowed).

Make the map with contients, so you get a strong Civ on one land mass. This will make it harder to get culture and diplo wins. Actually just turn of the UN. Otherwise you have to build it and not call for a vote.
A KAI will not emerge if you paly at lower level on pangea maps. Don't build all your wonders in the same city.
            Anyway whats wrong wiht conquest?

Or you can set it to 0, which IIRC will remove the limit totally.

I do play at the easiest level, but from what I have read I should try harder. I have never been over the middle range of level in any civ (and I spent many sleepless night since Civ 1).

Also last night I found that looking for advanced tech can be rewarding, since I traded my tech for 3 tech from the american.

You should get through the entire tech tree to the end of the modern era fairly easily with 8 civs on a standard size map at Regent difficulty.

It was only when I moved up to that level that I was able to complete the spaceship before the turn limit at 2050.

Playing at monarch level is of course a little bit harder than regent level, but if you manage it well you can earn enough money and get enough advances by selling the advances you are the first to discover. For example, after the Ancient Era, I often put my science slider to 80% to 100%, still earn money and technologically lead the world.

heh you guys make it sound like civ is harder at lower difficulty levels.
maybe i should actually try a low difficulty level to get a bigger chalenge?

hehe rasputin, i only play deity, i hardly build any wonder myself (just the small ones and at least one of the happiness ones)
The rest i just try to conquer.

in fact, on deity you don't do anything for yourself, you just conquer everything (workers, wonders, techs)

and yeah, i think research is quicker, i have never played anything else than deity (i always start at the highest diff level at strat games, and yes i admit it was a tough start with civ3) but in my current game, i am in 1250BC, and there are only 3 techs to be discovered in ancient times.

This game i had been lucky enough to get 2 techs from huts that i could emediately trade for more techs enabeling me to start on polytheism early and trade that for all the other ancient techs when i completed it first. But most games, i am not that lucky and just have to fight for my techs very early and have my victim pay the techs in peace nagotiations.
The AI trades techs at an insane rate, you can't ever keep up with them in researching yourself, sometimes you can keep up in the tradings, sometimes you don't. The speed with which teching goes is insane.

The reason people do not get all the techs at the lower levels is they win the game long before then, unless playing conquest/domination only on larger maps.
