  • Carthage?!

Why did they add Carthage to PTW? Carthage was a Phoenician colony. It was only one city. And it wasn't nearly as great as the Phoenicians were. They should've made the Phoenicians as the civ and Carthage as one of the cities.
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

BTW, Phoenecia itself was a colony -- of the Canaanites, until they got wiped by the Israelites. Phoenecia was the largest surviving colony.

besides cathago outstripped Phoenicia in both size and power by 250 BC when they begain to clash with Rome. By this time Carthage had colonies in Sicily and Spain, a challange to Roman power. In addition the Carthagenian Empire comprised most of what is modern day Lybia.

One reason : Hannibal. Most people have at least heard of him. That is more than you can say about all lot of the others.

Yeah, but most have heard of him as either a psychotic psycologist, or the cigar-chomping leader of The A-Team.

Carthage was a political power unto itself. Most civilizations were originally colonies of earlier civilizations.

I'd mention the United States, except that I remember the conflicts over whether America should be in the game.

Yeah, that's true, but at least in most cases the colonies in question had been in place a few thousand years. We've only been on this continent for the past 400.
